Local kid turns down MSU scholarship to persue rap

This kid Jay Harris was a 3-star high school football recruit, ranked 2nd-best WR in the state, from my rival high school. He was signed by Michigan State to a full ride in February, and called the coaches this week to tell them he had a change of plans and was going to try to be a rapper.

This dude's catching a ton of flak around here and across the country. Talk in the hood down the street is that this kid screwed up big time and should have gone to MSU and gotten the best of both worlds. I try not to hate on people's music dreams because I'm an aspiring musician myself...but no scholarship, no free school, little talent, big mistake!

Who needs education, school, money, and fame when you live in a rocking tree house like this guy.

Judging by his tree fort walls he's equally as talented at graffiti as he is at rapping. Go hard kid.

The rap video that you posted sounds like the rest of the crappy **** that is popular today in the rap world.

However if he knows the right people, he has a shot at making it. That's how it is nowadays, at least it seems like it.

When offered free higher education, take it! Maybe his rap name should be crash-n-burn.

The production value and beat in that were awful so I actually tried watching some of his other videos and freestyles to see if there was anything there. Can't say it looks too promising for the kid. At all. Kid actually seems clean cut and well spoken in most of his videos. Wants to be more 'hood' than he is. Bet there's 25 dudes on State's football team that can rap better than him right now. He could've gotten some free hood lessons along with everything else.

I've said it on here before but I'm an engineer at a music studio in Philly. We get people like this in the studio every week. They bring in a beat then rap one long verse for two minutes and think they're ready to push it on the street. That's when I or someone else tells them they need to break it up into parts, and, most importantly, need a hook. Too much unity and not enough variety as we say in the songwriting world. Change it up and figure out a structure, because no one will remember your two minute rambling after they listen to it once.
