I was in 3rd grade. I had just turned 7. Why I remember this so vividly is beyond me, but anyway. I remember hearing kids talk about it at school, and you know there is always the older kids who "know" (like 4th and 5th graders) who think it is hilarious to pick on kids who still believe. So me being the oldest of 3 children, I guess I really didn't have anyone close older to me who would have me believe otherwise. Anyway, I guess I had kept hearing it and what not, but right before Christmas I remember I asked my mom if I could talk to her about something. I remember I walked into my parents room, and shut the door behind me. I was almost embarrassed to asked, but I asked my mom if Santa was real. She asked me what did I think? I told her I believed in him, but he wasn't really practical (you know coming down the chimney and what not), and she basically told me I was right, and that he isn't real so to speak, but it is something you believe in 'spirit' so to say. I never really got upset, I took it for what it was. My brother is 2 years younger than me, and my sister is 5 years younger than me, so I always enjoyed "knowing" and yet playing along while my brother and sister still believed in him.

Funny you bring up about a 13 year old still believing though. I had a buddy, actually my best friend throughout grade school who was the youngest of 3 boys in his family. The 2 other brothers were atleast 5-6 years older than him and his parents wanted to baby him because he was the youngest, and I am 100% this kid believed in Santa until he was in 8th grade (like 14). He had made a comment one day at lunch, something along the lines of hoping what he'd get from Santa and we were like you've got to be kidding me.

Anyway, that's my story! I don't really think any age before 5th grade is embarassing. I actually feel bad for the kids who's siblings ruin in for them when they are 4 and 5. Obviously once you know, Christmas takes on the meaning for you as you see it the rest of your life, but it's always cool to see how excited little kids gets around this time of year and how into the spirit they get.

Did anyone's parents have a friend or relative call them pretending to be Santa so you could talk to him? That's another old trick.
