In the late years of the 20th century, me and a group of friends left the cozy confines of Rochester, NY, at 19 years old, and moved all the way to Boulder, CO. A few nights before we left, we were partying with friends and saying our goodbyes, and we decided to go to our local nature center and steal the 3X5' wooden sign that was at the entrance to the nature preserve. We thought it would be perfect for the decor of our new apartment, it was like a piece of home on our wall. It didn't stop there, over half of us were Irish, so we saw a guy flying an Irish flag, and we decided that it needed to go with us as well.
The nature center sign was hung from the front of our porch, for all to see. People used to stop by all the time and ask if this really was a nature center, or what exactly it is that we do there. They would come up to our screen door, look in, and see a couple dead house plants, piles of empty Black Label and Olympia beer cans, and usually the room was hazed out with that funky Rocky Mt. skunk. It was good for many laughs. The Irish flag was put up on the wall in the living room, and whenever friends would visit us from NY, it would become the backdrop to many a picture. After living in Colorado for three years, one of my roomies and I moved back to NY and brought the flag back with us. One night after a welcome home party, we took the flag, folded it nicely and placed it on the front step of the house we stole it from. It was back up the flag pole, flapping proudly in the breeze, the next day! Oh, the stories it could tell. I have no clue what happened to the nature center sign.

Me and a friend went through a phase of stealing signs from roadworks when we were about 18, and drunk. Novelty wore off after a while though..

When I was a high school senior, I drove around one night with a group of friends. I cannot recall what we were initially doing, but we ended up going on a theft/vandalism spree (using my mom's car of course since I was a complete moron). One of us thought it would be a good idea to steal some city barricades. We weren't sure what to do with them, since it was done in spontaneity, but ultimately decided to put them in the yard of one of our loser acquaintances. He was the kid that hung out with us at school, but could not process that none of us liked him, even as we constantly dissed him to his face (typical high school dick move). Once we realized how hilarious this was, we spent the next two or three hours stealing various city property and private property (lawn decorations, tires, etc) and dropping them off in this kids' yard. I wish I had a picture of this because the amount of crap we unloaded was incredible. You couldn't walk through the yard because of it all. Amazingly enough we were never caught during or after, despite this taking place in a high residential suburb of a major city.

In high school 2 guys out of our group of friends were obsessed with stealing signs. One of them had an unfinished basement we would always drink in and it was full of stolen signs. It was funny the first couple times but after that it got pretty lame.

There's a road about 30 miles fromhere called Gaylord. As senior prank we were gonna tape it to the principals car, but they gave us the day off knowing it was senior prank day. After the sign stuff got old we picked up a roll of caution tape and danger tape. Caution taped intersections and danger taped the bridges. We would wait to watch people pull up and stop all confused then turn around.

I've got between 60 and 75 street signs, most hanging around the garage.
Only "stole" one though. The rest, have been picked up along road sides during the winter and spring when people slide around and take out signs. I throw on a hard hat, vest, and put the light bar on my truck and go snag'em.

Great stories, especially Val's. Very poignant.
Street signs are more than just markers on the road. They are markers along one's pathway through life.Haha, full poles are the best. Where did you put it? Leave it in the rental?

I remember reading about this dumbass who stole like 50 signs, then displayed them on his front lawn. I think he got a 100,000 dollar fine and some jail time for that. Knew some people that were into stealing signs and shooting them.
