After having an agent who was the mom of one of my friends who sucked at her job for 8 months, I switched to a younger guy who knew what he was doing and it only took 3 weeks. It's not that the first agent was sleazy or anything, she just wasn't good at her job or didn't have the right contacts. The new guy came off as very genuine and someone I might have hung out with outside of his job. He found a great deal on a house in a location I wanted and still keeps in touch from time to time.
Having the right real estate agent is important, IMO. Not all of them are money grubbing shysters. While you are browsing around, make sure not to sign any contracts with them unless you feel like they have your best interest in mind and they 'get' what you are looking for in a house. Don't be afraid to say 'no'. Don't let them try to convince you to buy something you know you don't want either. They are serving you, not the other way around.
