Model Trains-Anyone?

Anyone else like trains? I've liked real trains since I was a kid. I'm not a 'railfain' or whatever they call themselves, but I have always been interested in them. Anyway, my girlfriend decided this year she wants a train around the Christmas tree so I figured I'd look on eBay. What the hell? I remember as a kid my brother, sister and I had 2 Lionel junkers that we'd annoy my parents with as we'd make the track go around the tree and everywhere else. But it was junk. I look on eBay and you can't find anything decent for under a bill. I've seen that Norfolk Southern commercial so decide to look at that, and notice I can buy that bad boy for about $1,200.00 (yeah right), but absolutely awesome! (

Anyway after looking for a while I bought an Athearn HO scale Norfolk Southern train for just under $200.00. It's kinda cool I guess. I never realized people put so much money into model railroads. Anyone into this? I've seen just the locomotives online costing about $800.00-$1,000.00 for I guess people that are real serious.

Wish I saw this thread earlier. We have a bunch of old trains and an assload of tracks collecting dust in the basement. They were my grandfather's, as he was an avid train collector. Technically they belong to my mom but she lives in Phoenix and has wanted to get rid of some of this sh!t for a long time. We could have worked something out I'm sure.

Older neighbor across the street from me used to have them down cellar, he would say come on over and he would switch it on. As a kid thought it was awesome, he built a Volcano in the middle of it and smoke would come out. When i saw this thread brought back some memories.

Ahhhh, the good ol' days with model train sets. Used to have a piece of junk one is my attic. I'd put mini soldiers around the tracks and knock them over with small objects while the train was zooming around. Now that I think of it, the layout was quite nice. I would not be interested in buying a model train, little kid with good imagination could be entertained for a long time.

In the one house I used to own I turned the finished attic into a Model train room for my kids (and me) , I had 380 feet of track that I could run three trains on at the same time , it was quite a layout , when I sold the house everything went with it as well , that train track got me the price I was asking for the house ,,

I used to destroy whatever I could with the Lionel train I had when I was kid, which ultimately led to the train being basically destroyed also. I remember when I was younger our 2 fatso cats always would lay on the track underneath the back of the Christmas tree. As smart as cats are, they'd always just sit there and then choo-choo right into them. The train would always derail, and surprisingly they'd be too lazy to even move sometimes.

Stop with trains and start training UFC like me.

When my son was 2-5 he was crazy about trains. We bought him all kinds of sets real expensive too.
But now he's much older (8) and doesnt seem interested. He's into football and more mature activities.
