Logic/Formal Reasoning Help

Playing the odds on anyone actually knowing how to do this stuff, but I have absolutely no clue how to comprehend this. Below is a link to a pdf with basically the stuff that I'm doing.

http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j...NAxMPfQqTyy1aQ

If anyone can assist/put this stuff in layman's terms or offer any sort of help whatsoever, it would be much appreciated.

Seek a new major/career. There is NO practical use for any of that. Studying formulas to improve your logic and reasoning skills is like studying advanced physics to help you hit more home runs in baseball. You don't need to know all the details and the math behind it, just the three biggest points. The rest is common sense, which you can't teach.

Any professor who is getting paid to teach this crap you posted has been robbing the school blind. You're better off skipping all that stuff and going out to party.

You lost me after the second page. The beginning is fairly basic though. Spent a lot of time doing logic in a Computer Ethics course.

This is copied from my notebook directly, which I took down from an example my prof showed.

Premise 1 - (P ^ Q) -> (R v S) ^ ~(R ^ S)
Premise 2 - S -> [(R ^ Q) v (~R ^ ~Q)] v ~P
Premise 3 - R ^ Q -> S
Consequent - P -> ~Q

1) Show P -> ~Q [CD 3]
2) P [ACD]
3) Show ~Q [ID 4,21]
4) Q [AID]
5) P ^ Q [2,4 Adj]
6) (R v S) ^ ~(R ^ S) [5, Prem 1, Modus Ponens]
7) Show S [ID 14,12]
8) ~S [AID]
9) ~(R ^ Q) [8, Prem 3, Modus Tollens]
10) ~R v ~Q [9, Theorem 65]
11) ~R [4, Double Negation, 10, Modus Tollendo Pollens]
12) R v S [6, Simplification]
13) ~R ^ ~S [11, 8, Adjunction]
14) ~(R v S) [13, Theorum 66]
15) [(R ^ Q) v (~R ^ ~Q)] v ~P [7, Prem 2, Modus Ponnens]
16) (R ^ Q) v (~R ^ ~Q) [2, Double Negation, 15, Modus Tollendo Pollens]
17) ~(R ^ S) [6, Simplification]
18) ~R v ~S [17, Theorem 65]
19) ~R [7, Double Negation, 18, Modus Tollendo Pollens]
20) ~(R ^ Q) [19, Theorem 43]
21) ~Q [16, 20, Modus Tollendo Pollens, Simplification]

Boxes have been drawn from line 2-21, from line 4-21 and from line 8-14.

For reference if anybody is following me..

T43 - ~P -> ~(P ^ Q)
T65 - ~(P ^ Q) <-> ~P v ~Q
T66 - ~(P v Q) <-> ~P ^ ~Q

Let me say, I do not understand why that's right, I would not even know how to get to line 1 in that derivation, what is written in the brackets is also mind boggling...

I'm def boned aren't I..

I knew it. In my earlier post I said stuff like this is why philosophy is the most useless major/class. But I edited it out when I realized you actually hadn't said anything about philosophy. I knew I latched onto that idea for a reason though...what do your magic formulas say about that?

Also I say put the book down and stop studying this nonsense. Just go into your final and wing it. It seriously will not matter what grade you get in this course unless you're a philosophy major or something related. And I'm assuming you're not, because you're late in your college education and you would have come across this stuff already. THAT is reasoning. And I didn't have to follow any of these formulas. Go get yourself laid. It's the end of the semester. Stop screwing around with this stuff.

If I don't study, then I get myself laid.

I like it, logical indeed.

I understand the concepts just fine. I don't need to understand all the ridiculous philosophy behind it to understand logic and reasoning. Intelligent people often don't.
