Indian Ocean on tsunami watch after 8.7 quake

Quote:
A tsunami watch has been issued for countries across the Indian Ocean after a large earthquake hit waters off Banda Aceh, Indonesia, sending residents pouring from their homes in panic.

The U.S. Geological Survey said Wednesday the quake was centred 33 kilometres beneath the ocean floor around 495 kilometres from the provincial capital of Banda Aceh. It was initially estimated at magnitude 8.7.

"An earthquake this size in the ocean definitely has the potential to produce a damaging tsunami, but hard to know at this point how exactly water was displaced," said CBC meteorologist and seismologist Johanna Wagstaffe.

"Tsunami will be main concern, rather than any shaking, since its far away from land."

Said, an official at Indonesia's Meteorology and Geophysics Agency who goes by only one name, confirmed that a tsunami watch has been issued.

Indonesia straddles a series of fault lines that makes the vast island nation prone to volcanic and seismic activity.

A giant 9.1-magnitude quake centered in the same area off the coast of Indonesia on Dec. 26, 2004, triggered a tsunami in the Indian Ocean that killed 230,000 people, almost three-quarters of them in Aceh.

Somebody needs to get his ass back over to the happy feelings thread....

You know its Habs' job to keep us up on all the earthquakes and what not going on around the world, plus this gives us somewhere to post if a tsunami hits

Racism is against site policy. This is a discussion thread and the thread makes sense as we are now able to discuss it.
