"Frankenstorm" Set to Rock US

I live in Pittsburgh and I am ****ing afraid of what might happen. Local reports here estimating 6-8 inches of rain (I've seen estimates of a foot), possible foot of snow (depends of how quick the cold air moves in), winds at a steady 40-60 mph for 24-36 hours, and freezing cold weather at points. Best part is this storm last from Friday night until Wednesday morning. That's incredible.

Quote:
An unusual nasty mix of a hurricane and a winter storm that forecasters are now calling "Frankenstorm" is likely to blast most of the East Coast next week, focusing the worst of its weather mayhem around New York City and New Jersey.

U.S. government forecasters on Thursday upped the odds of a major weather mess, now saying there's a 90 percent chance that the East will get steady gale-force winds, heavy rain, flooding and maybe snow starting Sunday and stretching past Halloween on Wednesday.

Meteorologists say it is likely to cause $1 billion in damages.

The storm is a mix of Hurricane Sandy, now in the Caribbean as a Category 2 storm, as well as an early winter storm in the West and a blast of arctic air from the North. They're predicted to collide and park over the country's most populous coastal corridor and reach as far inland as Ohio.

Hurricane Sandy lashed the central Bahamas on Thursday night with violent winds and torrential rains, after raging through the Caribbean where it caused at least 21 deaths and forced postponement of a hearing at the Guantanamo naval base on Cuba.

The hurricane part of the storm is likely to come ashore somewhere in New Jersey on Tuesday morning, said National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration forecaster Jim Cisco. But this is a storm that will affect a far wider area, so people all along the East have to be wary, Cisco said.

Coastal areas from Florida to Maine will feel some effects, mostly from the hurricane part, he said, and the other parts of the storm will reach inland from North Carolina northward.

"It will get broader. It won't be as intense, but its effects will be spread over a very large area," the hurricane center's chief hurricane specialist, James Franklin, said Thursday.

One of the more messy aspects of the expected storm is that it just won't leave. The worst of it should peak early Tuesday, but it will stretch into midweek, forecasters say. Weather may start clearing in the mid-Atlantic Nov. 1 and Nov. 2 in the Northeast, Cisco said.

"It's almost a weeklong, five-day, six-day event," Cisco said Thursday from NOAA's northern storm forecast center in near Washington. "It's going to be a widespread serious storm."

hope for the best everywhere. So far it doesn't look pretty for those on or close, to the coast.

Not sure what will happen up in the Boston area, probably all the hype as usual. Once it hits the cold water should diminish down more though, But i will say load up on the beers, nothing better than drinking during it if it does happen, pretty much a tradition for myself for big storms. But i will say hoping peoples power does not go out, and everyone be safe.

There is a lot of hype for this storm, which could potentially be really nasty in the northeast. But really, it is nothing that we haven't seen before up here.

My concern is flooding. I don't mind losing power so much, we have a wood stove to keep us warm and cook on. The remnants of Irene and Lee last year made a mess of towns in the Southern tier, Adirondacks, and Catskills, and flooded my backyard. Luckily when the house was built in 1830, they put it on high ground, something a lot of developers fail to do these days.

Regardless, it will be interesting to see what materializes, and I hope everyone stays out of harms way. Like smashem, I will be stocking up on beer and whiskey in case I get stuck at home

Just got a call from the town/recording message, to move everything from outside, could be a historical storm. Oh well guess i will drink and move stuff around today, glad we basically moved everything the past few weeks once it got colder, and they also said be prepared for no electricity for 2/3 days

Was supposed to head to my family's beach home this weeked outside of Rehoboth, but all of that got scrapped. The Coast Guard is making everyone remove their boats the last few days. So I just stayed home, which is about a 3 hour drive from the beach in Southeastern Pennsylvania and the people here are going just as nuts buying water and generators. Hopefully it is just rain and no power outages again.

Always have enough food in the freezer for at least two weeks that I can stretch out for quite a while if needed , just purchased four cased of water (48 bottles to the case) just in case the water is contaminated , had two already can make the 6 cases last for quite a while also , water is one thing a lot of PPL overlook ......

Another thing we do down here regarding water is fill up the bath tub. You can use that water as you need it for whatever.

New York is going get hit on Monday. Winds gust could be above 30. I'm usually not too concerned about storms but this one seems legit. I have not driven in crazy weather yet, hopefully it stays that way.

Another media-exagerated non-event (remember hurricane Irene) just so you go out and buy some Walmart stuff to get the economy going.
