Just 99.99% useless

Living in the California desert most of my life I know less than zilch about wells, so bear with me.

Any of you folks have experience with wells? My grandparents place gets it's water from a well and they used too much water yesterday and the pump stopped working or something. So they spent all night without water and called an all encompassing local handyman service (plumbing/heating/etcetc) and they came out and "primed" the pump. And managed to do some other random service I imagine was just to pocket some coin. Quite the racket they got going... But I digress. From the sounds of it this priming thing doesn't sound all that complicated, and it boggles my mind not knowing the workings of a lifeline like your source of water.

So dump it on me, how do these things work? Should the pump need "priming" again, is it something you can do yourself? Other common hiccups/problems? Am I barking up a tall tree here?
