conflict

As you know I'm a hockey coach now to 7-8 year olds. An assistant to be specific. Apparantly the third assistant.

Both these clowns that run the team are okay in terms of hockey knowledge for Arizona guys but not up to snuff compared to a guy from Thunder Bay Ontario.

They can do things much better. I've made a few suggestions and can tell it's irritated the head coach. I've been very subtle about things and have kept a low profile. But I have much more to offer especially in practise. I have specific skating techniques I can teach these kids along with other drills.

How do I get this across to this insecure guy?

That's about all you can do. Just keep giving your input, but unfortunately it's the head coach's decision and in youth hockey, some of the coaches can be very stubborn and cocky in the fact that they believe it's their way or the highway.

Since you're new, you just have to build that respect factor and hope that they realize you can bring something to the table. As time goes on, they should hopefully ease up.

the phoenix youth hockey teams have a good program and coaches, once they get older. I wouldn't be too worried about 7 or 8, just do a lot of stickhandling, passing, skating stuff. and watch them run into eachother. good times had by all

You want to improve relations? Start by spelling 'practice' with a C.

Have your kid say the coach tried to touch his no no place. Then the team will be all yours

Maybe they aren't aware that you're from Thunder Bay, Ontario.

In all honesty, you're an assistant coach. From the sounds of it, the third assistant coach. I really wouldn't take it too seriously. Let the head coach do his thing and let him call the shots. Maybe in practice you can mention a new technique or drill that can be useful. Don't push it too much. Some "coaches" can be ego driven or insecure and a new guy from Thunder Bay, Ontario might ruffle some feathers. In my experience, an assistant coach or one who is part of a group of assistant coaches-and the new guy at that-are really just helpers. They do what the Head coach asks of them to help him out and make things go smoother. do you have a child on the team?

yea my son is on the team. It's the only reason I'm doing it.

but I think you're advice is sound. I'm going to continue to lay low and once this guy warms up a bit maybe he will feel okay about my presence.

From a breakaway team where you are the coach, take all the best players with you incuding his son (even if he sucks) then enter the league kick their asses on the ice and on the score board go on to win the league and then tell him where to stick it.

Then he'll come begging back to you asking to be your 4th assistant coach.
