Great post Tim! I usually drink Guinness if I'm out (the Garage in Greenwich Village pours the best I've ever tasted - never been to the brewery) but Samuel Smith's Oatmeal Stout has been my favorite beer for years. I've never had the Alesmith Speedway, and I've been waiting to try the Canadian Breakfast Stout.

Two more I'd like to add to your list is Lancaster Milk Stout (5%) & Brooklyn Black Chocolate Stout (10%).

Any more info/opinions on stouts would be appreciated.

As far as Sam Adams is concerned, they are easily the best of the commercial brewers and the Boston Lager is the only lager I'll drink with pleasure.

When you say Sierra Nevada, I assume you're talking about the regular Pale Ale, which is a good beer but one that I'd classify as entry level. Other great brews they make is their winter release called Celebration, and their Stronger IPAs Torpedo, Hoptimum, and the two Harvests: Nothern Hemisphere and Southern Hemisphere.

As far as Brown Ales go, Newcastle is what I would consider to be distinctly average. Dogfish Head Imperial Brown Ale, Cigar City Maduro and Rogue Hazelnut Brown Nectar are my three favorites.

Dogfish Head 60-120 are all awesome, as is just about anything Dogfish puts out. In terms of IPAs, I listed a bunch a few posts up, many of the West Coast variety, which are more hop heavy than the East Coast variety which typically use a little more malt. Check the ones I listed above. Also, if you ever see a Russian River Pliny the Younger or Pliny the Elder, get it. Best beers in the world as rated by me and many, many others.

Lastly, Magic Hat #9 is an interesting beer which doesn't really fit into a style. Since it's sweet and fruity, I'll recommend one which is sweet and fruity and, for me, much preferable to a #9, although much different. Troegs Nugget Nectar. IT's a limited winter release but since you're in PA you probably still have access to it.

Hope this helps. As you can probably tell, I jump at the opportunity to talk about good beer. Happy Hunting.
I agree with everything here!!! I'll also use this opportunity to talk about the awesomeness that is Troegs Nugget Nectar. Hands down, one of the best beers ever made. I'd never think of comparing it to #9 so Im wondering how you made the comparison...

I used to love #9. I'll admit, its the beer that turned me on to the whole craft beer industry. Every now and then, I'll buy a 6 of it, but usually tend to stay away from it. Magic Hat has disappointed me lately, although their new IPA on Tour is fantastic.

DFH is basically the best hands down brewery (imo, of course). The ingredients they use, you'd never think would make a great beer, but it works on so many levels. Have you ever been to their brewery down in DE? If not, I recommend it. I learned a ton about the whole hops>bottling process. Only thing I dont like about the direction their going in is their prices ever since the whole brewmasters thing. Unfortunately, i think as they get more and more popular, it's gonna get more and more expensive.

If you like the Sierra Nevadas, I recommend their 30th Anniversary Ale and/or Stout. I got them last summer, not sure if theyre still around though, if you find one, check it out, I think you'll like it based on your what you said in your other post.

I seriously think we have identical pallates when it comes to beer though bro!

Yuengling has Oktoberfest coming out this fall. I'll definitely be picking up a case of that as soon as it comes out, also will be getting a case of Blue Moon pumpkin ale. I love the seasonal brews that come out in the fall.

A whole case of pumpkin ale? Ughh! I 'm lucky to be able to get 1 bottle down before switching. On a side note, your local swill (Iron City) is one of my favorite cheap brews. I've defended it many times here at home, and always drink it when I'm in your neck of the woods.

Thank you sir.

Actually just picked up a case of Brooklyn Black the other day, as it was on sale for something ridiculously cheap like $45.

The Canadian and Kentucky Breakfast Stouts are a bit harder to find than the regular Breakfast Stout but they'll be well worth the wait once you find them. In the mean time, you can probably find the regular Breakfast Stout at your local craft distributor. FYI, the Canadian version is the regular Breakfast Stout with a hint of Canadian Syrup. It's awesome.

As for other good stouts... hmmm... off the top of my head...

From the US:

-Three Floyds Dark Lord - May or may not be available in NYC

-Anything from Bells (Kalamazoo, Java, Expedition)

-Stone Imperial Stout

From Abroad:

Mikkeller Beer Geek Breakfast - From Denmark

Hitachino Nest Cappucino Stout - From Japan

Happy hunting...

Can't stand IC Light. Its acutally just the Ohio, Monogahela, and Allegheny river in a can. FYI.

Great minds drink alike!

This was a great year for Nugget Nectar. Either my local distributors got more of it or Troegs brewed more of it, as I was able to buy three cases of it over the span of a month and a half or so whereas last year it was only around for a couple weeks. Awesome, awesome beer. I'm saving a 12 pack or so for when it gets warm out.

As I said in my original post to the kid, I don't think it's like #9 at all, it was just the first thing that came to mind when I went to recommend a step up from #9. Nectar obviously sh*ts on #9 but as you say, #9 got a lot of people into craft beer so it definitely has its place.

Big Dogfish HEad fan. Everything about them is awesome. Innovators, small business whose 55 or so employees are paid primarily by profit sharing.

Have had the 30th Anniversary Sierras at a Sierra Nevada night at a local bar. Just about everything they brew is good also.

PM me for a drink if you're ever in Philadelphia.

Don't be so quick to write off pumpkin beers, unless, of course, you've had the ones I'm about to mention, then... well... do as you please.

Four different styles here, so you might not like all or even any of them if you really don't like pumpkin, but here goes:

Weyerbacher Imperial Pumpkin - My favorite pumpkin beer. Spicy, but not to the point where it overwhelms the beer, not overly pumpkin-y either. I think if you don't traditionally like pumpkin beers this might be your best bet.

Southern Tier Pumking - Much less spicy than the Weyerbacher but probably a different pumpkin taste than you would expect. A lot of people bow down to this beer and it's usually only available for a very short time in the fall.

Southampton Pumpkin Ale - A fairly light and smooth version (5.5%) but not like the Blue Moon version; much better.

Dogfish Head Punkin Ale - I like everything DFH brews, and this one is no different.

Again, Pumpkins may not be your thing, but if you haven't already, I'd try these before completely writing them off.

Local Micro near me

Two Brothers brewery
Twobrosbrew.com

They make a great bunch of small batch brews, that if ever in the western Chicago Burbs.. I suggest trying out.

My Favorites include:
Domain DuPage – a Carmel traditional French ale beer that’s short on tang but not on kick.
Bitter End – great all year round beer that is like its name a tiny bit bitter, but a classic mild malt drink.
Renaissance IPA – Light IPA with a Sweet aftertaste.
Heavy Handed IPA – Hard, tasty IPA, an eat your beer kinda beer.
Northwind Imperial Stout – Great Dark Malty beverage for the winter.

And then their King IPA the: Hop Juice Double IPA, at almost %10 alchohol by volume it is very strong on taste and aroma. Don’t plan on drinking anything after it, cause you sure wont taste it.
