I saw Bourque's entire career... At least in Boston.
Orr by a long shot. Harry Sinden tried to be diplomatic once in saying he'd take Orr for defense and Bourque for offense, or something like that. Not even close in my opinion. Orr still gives half the male population of the greater Boston area goose bumps when they see him... I was watching 'Bones' with one of my kids last night (show sucks by the way) and there was a picture of Orr on the wall in one of the character's office... I nearly jumped off the couch..."HEY!! Thats a pucture of Bobby Orr!!" Best part of the show.

Again, I'd take Orr because he was SOOOOO much better than everyone else, but I would understand why people would want the guy with the longer upside.

Bourque had 19 years... production did slip quite a bit after years 4-5. He just plain stopped rushing the puck up ice. Still a great defenseman but he lost his wheels early.
So, by the original question... Still Orr but, I can see why people would select Bourque

Bobby Orr could control the flow of the game when-ever he felt like it , if he wanted the flow to be fast , it was fast , if he wanted to slow it down , he slowed it down , no player in the history of the game ever did that before or after him , he was the greatest of all time , and did it all in such a short time .
Ray Bourque was one of the top five defence men to ever play the game , I put him up their with Orr/Harvey/Robertson/Bourque/Savard as my top five all time , but he was no "BOBBY ORR" !! NONE OF THEM WERE !!!!!

Don Sutton's got great career numbers, but I'd still rather have Sandy Koufax.
Bobby Orr is an easier pick the more I think about it. |

with modern day knee surgeons available i'd take Bobby Orr, and watch him perform his magic over 19 years
when orr was on the ice it was his rink, ray bourque was a great player but he never was a game breaker in a way orr was.. also Orr delivered the cup. it was his cup and anyone who saw the way he played there can only say it was his cup-- bourque was in the finals( with B's) too but what he did there didnt bring the cup.... |
