Football hits are more awkward and that's what puts the risk of injury up a bit. In hockey if you get nailed, you're either up against the boards, or else in the open-ice where your feet will come out from under you. In football there's a greater chance of twisting your knee or having some huge fatso land on top of you.

Plus the size disparity in football usually makes the hits look harsher. 300lbs DL vs. 200lb QB?
