fights in other sports

How does the frequency of fighting in hockey compare with the other major professional sports leagues (NBA, MLB, NFL)? Sure, in hockey, fighting is codified, but fights happen in every league. I've read that baseball actually has more bench-clearing brawls, but haven't found any statistics to back that up.

So, that's my question. Are there any statistics for the other major sports that show how often players fight or have some sort of physical altercation?

Just getting sick of hearing folks dis hockey when, for example, a violent tackle happens in every football play, and would like to find some comparative stats.

Thanks.

I'm guessing there isn't any stat for fights in other sports. Fighting is a part of hockey and isn't frowned upon by fans of hockey. However, fighting is definitely not a part of baseball, basketball or football so you really won't find a stat on bench clearers or anything like that.

I can see how baseball might have more bench clearers than hockey. It seems like after someone gets beaned, the benches empty but rarely do they ever do anything.

For sure, but 90% of the time there isn't even a punch thrown. Players storm the infield from all corners of the ballfield.... and then just stand around and look at each other.

fighting in the NLL (national lacrosse league) i think has a 50% lower fight rate then the nhl and it follows same rules as hockey 5 min for fighting and thats it..

but NLL fights is just street fighting where ur more likely to get hurt and the fights are longer so thats an understandable stat

You will never see a "STAGED" fight in baseball/basketball/soccer/football/lacrosse , hockey is the only game that happens in , it's also the only game you will here the phrase "I WENT TO THE FIGHTS THE OTHER NIGHT AND A HOCKEY GAME BROKE OUT" !!!!!!

There are staged fights in NLL.

I have watched much Football, and I have never seen a fight...you can't punch a guy with that helmet on.

Basketball maybe one or two a year, for the whole league? Unless you count pushing around, which would still warrant a suspension probably.

Baseball, sure more bench clearing brawls, but what did the NHL have this year, 0? Every 'fight' in baseball is a bench clearing brawl, though maybe two punches will get thrown. And at that MLB must have what, 2 a year, maybe 3?

I don't think you will ever have an argument from the fighting stand point to go against the other sports. Now maybe if you wanted to talk straight injuries football might be worse?

The beauty of fighting in hockey is that you're on ice, which changes everything. I don't think fighting belongs in other sports.

And I guess the fact that there are more bench clearing brawls in baseball isn't surprising since you rarely see bench clearing brawls in the NHL. Jumping onto the ice during a fight is a pretty big no-no.

Actually, I played football for 6 seasons. 1 season wide reciever, 5 Quarterback.
I also played hockey for 2 years, both defensemen.
And the hardest I've ever been hit was in hockey.
So saying Football has more violent tackles is rubbish, the hits just look bigger.
The only thing football has going for it is, sometimes you'll get hit by 2 or more people at once.

Rugby has the biggest hits in it by far. or Aussie rules

I disagree 100% Lacrosse (which seems to be the only thing i talk about in this thread) has the exact same need for fighting.. lacrosse is pretty much hockey physical wise only ur allowed to use ur stick as a weapon to some degree in lacrosse..

I can agree with that. Lacrosse seems to follow the same code as hockey, and they fight like hockey players, so the fights don't turn into street fights.

I still think the ice makes hockey fights what they are though.

YouTube - NLL Fights
Gg I payed Lacrosse for a few years and was involved in my share of scraps , was suspended a couple times for excessive roughness , I had never bin involved in a staged fight and never seen one in the time I played , not saying they don't happen , just saying as a player I have never bin involved in one and never heard of one being staged ....
