Good thread idea !
Hey GiantsFan, normally I agree with you- NOT this time. Larry Playfair for Buffalo
hands down ( respect the hell out of Rob Ray & loved his fighting style, but he wasn't avoided like Larry was which explains his larger number of fights ). Also, for what it's worth, the following are easy picks for me : Bob Probert- Detroit [ by light years ! ] & Chicago [ alot closer ] Dave Brown- Philadelphia [ ALL things considered, Wilson, Shultz & Brashear are honorable mention at best ] Marty McSorley- Edmonton [ just edging a PRIME Dave Semenko ] Bob Gassoff- St. Louis saw him briefly when very young: possibly the most psychotic & feared player in NHL history ! Dan Maloney- LA Kings/Chicago/Detroit another absolute lunatic that barely ever lost a bout in the early- mid 70's J Bob "Battleship" Kelly-[ for my bro games on TV back in the day to believe how much room he got on the ice.. |

And its great to see your mention of the under appreciated Dan Maloney. During the one year he played for LA, he was the NHL champ. "The Mummy" certainly was a lunatic. I loved his temper and his uppercuts. |

Some Great Posts!
Whether we all agree or not, most of the key names have been captured for the teams mentioned. I haven't seen calls on the Washington Capitals (Scott Stevens) and Montreal Canadiens (John Kordic), so I've added my choices.

This is my 3rd attempt to post with the new computer:
CHI - B.Wilson best fighter period CHI Probie isn't the same BUF- Playfair co champ and one of the most feared career enders PHI- (READ CHI) Brown was a better enforcer... Wilson a better pure fighter( better balance , chin, stronger) ANA, HART, NJ, WPG- Jimmy Mac let's try this...so I don't spend an hr typing only to lose it !!! Yeah, it works.... STL- Twist with Ewen close 2nd WASH- Simon and Paul Mulvey TOR- Heart and soul ...Wendel Clark fought with fury , passion, don't care too much for the sideshow antics of Domi BOS- Gotta go with the little big man ...Stanley Jonathan , Wensink and Miller close behind MTL- Kordic VCR- Fraser I'm missing some VCR Brash stuff because what I have he's not too impressive ATL- Plett QUE, COL- Simon PGH- Battleship Kelly EDM- Hate to admit it but I have to go with Laraque...didn't care for the style , Marty Mac and Sammy trailing closely NYR- There haven't been too many good ones...Fotiu is about it JK, Sandy Mac not their best stuff NYI - Nystrom with Gillies in his draft Last edited by battleship25; 10-21-2009 at 11:46 AM. |

Nothing against Curt Fraser, but exactly which fights impressed you? He's not even listed in my top 4 toughest Canucks alltime.

Colorado Avalanche
There are actually a lot of good choices over the years. Worrell, Simon and Parker are the top 3 in my eyes. Parker being number one in my opinion. |

If your going to go with Kurtenbach in Vancouver then Ferguson has to be top in Montreal. I think Kurt was not the same fighter in Vancouver he had been earlier in his career. He actually was beaten badly by Islander Dave Lewis while with the Canucks. He would have pissed on him earlier in his career. For me I think Domi was best in Toronto . Oreilly in Boston, Stevens in Washington. Lots of good choices here.

Like I said most of what I have of Brash is not good , hugging, afraid of JK, but I did see him beat a tatoo on McSorley one night in VCR, don't have it on tape but saw it on TV. I'm sure you must know by now that Brash almost never impresses me...I don't care for the safety 1st, I'll spin you off balance so only I can hit you and hopefully I won't get punched back ( like Simon...wow, what a shot that was ...juniors , I know ...but maybe that set the tone for his NHL career...he did start off brutal in the NHL (MTL)...he hugged way too much for my taste. As far as Fraser, well he played a long time and had only a handful of losses, was never beat up bad (Wilson got him good but he had to rally from behind), KO'd atleast 4 guys in his first 2 seasons...after that everbody knew to not go punch-for -punch with Fraser. It was funny to see huge guys like Plett hanging on to a small guy like Fraser...problem was he tasted Fraser's power in their 1st encounter. One of the few times Plett was ever dropped...that's impressive!! Knocking out Lee Fogalin for 5 min.... impressive . Knocking out Dave Farrish with the most beautiful right hand bomb...impressive. How many guys did Brash KO ???? I can't remember ...or I certainly haven't seen it. The Nystrom fight which Fraser told me was the best fight he was ever in ( also mentioned in an interview with Brad Gassoff with the same glowing review) Beating a very tough and underrated Jay Wells...who is in my top 30 I won't go into the CHI fights...tko of Probert, Clark...breaking Shayne Corson's jaw, beating JK then later another devastating KO of K.King with Min. I have my issues with Fraser- fast starter but didn't finish strong in a long fight, but he was incredibly strong and had one of the best right hands I've ver seen ...including boxers. Like Brash, he didn't seem to like getting hit...a big negative for me. Although he did have some great fights , something that Brash has rarely done in my opinion..I'm just not a fan of Brash...but I'm liking him more now, seems like he's opening up more... |

one of the other highlights of Fraser was pre NHL when he played Juniors for Victoria Cougars....Victoria's main rival was New West and they both had insane tough teams... Peacemaker mentioned he was at the game when Fraser KO'd Beck twice (i belive i got it right Peace?) might explain why Bubba fought defensively in the NHL unless enraged....Peace also said he use to sit behind the New West bench and that night he could hear Beck asking Punch not to send him back out on the ice (no mas....no mas)....keep in mind Peacmaker was a New West fan (Becks Team) i know it was junior but that is impressive!! |
