I'm not familiar with Flaman, but have seen his name mentioned here in Remember When? quite a bit.

My curiosity was piqued, and on DYG they only credit him with 13 fights over 15 seasons. Is that incorrect or am I missing something?

Not sure how many he had in total(alot more than 13 he played 17 years)but VideoGuy did some research (I think he worked in the NHL archives dept.) and said Flaman fought more than any other player in the decade usually sticking up for teammates and VideoGuy picked Flaman as his choice for best fighter. Flaman held all Bruin penalty minute records until O'Reilly came along. Ferny also played for the Mapleleafs for three years.

Both Wilson And Brown were better fighters than Schultz. That being said neither of them caused the electricity in a building that Schultz did. When you went to a Flyer game in early - mid 70's everyone was watching Schultz .He was the top draw enforcer . Fans went crazy when he stepped on the ice. That has got to count for somethink. Here are a couple of his bouts.

Flaman

I've posted this before, here's Flaman just after a fight with a Canadien. Flaman was not well liked in Montreal back then. Look at the kid pounding on the glass, great stuff even back in the 50's.

What about a guy named LARRY PLAYFAIR? Yes Ray fought more and had a longer shelf life in Buffalo but as a "PURE FIGHTER" , its Playfair IMO.

I respect your opinion but I disagree.

This has always been a contention on my part that BEHN WILSON was the best pure fighter on the FLYERS. Yes, Dave Brown was a great all-time fighter, one of the best and a MUCH BETTER ENFORCER than Wilson but I would take Big Behn in a ten fight series to beat him. Dave Brown fought many more fights than Big Behn but Wilson had all the tools and was NEVER truly "beaten down" by anyone as he lost very few of his fights in his career.

With regards to Wendel Clark and Tie Domi, again this was a very difficult choice but for a considerable period Wendel had a respect level in the NHL that was hard to match and he was the "heart and soul" of the Toronto Maple Leafs. Domi is definitely one of the All-Time greats however but some of his bones were made with the Winnipeg Jets and the NY Rangers in his early years. IMO Wendel did more to earn this title.

Playfair was my second choice ... and he would probably fit in the "Remember When" category better than Ray, but I'll stick with my pick.

IMO Ray's Longevity as a Sabre, his battles with Domi, the fact that he was part of the NHL team PIM record team, his popularity with the fans, and a card that included many of the top fighters of his era I gave him the nod.... I do agree that Playfair was a better "pure fighter" though....

Semenko's best days were in Edmonton before the Bruise Brothers got really going as I recall. That is where Semenko earned his reputation.

I think Brown is one of the few guys that could really put a beating on Behn Wilson. When he had that left loose, he was unstoppable. Wilson was great, but Brown was better.

By how? Jumping other players before they had the gloves off? It makes me sick to my stomach that some people hold him to such high esteem. Vastly overrated.

Oh yea, I think that Paul Laus deserves the nod as the Florida Panthers 'all-time fighter'....not Peter Worrell.

You can only choose one per team, who would it be? Remember, this would only be the body of work with that team.

I''ll get things started with a few:

Boston Bruins: Stan Jonathan
NY Rangers:Nick Fotiu
NY Islanders: Bob Nystrom
Philadelphia Flyers: Behn Wilson
St.Louis Blues:Tony Twist
Toronto Maple Leafs:Wendel Clark

Who would you pick as the NUMBER ONE FIGHTER for your teams?
For me it's got to be John Wensink. The kid was tough as nails and would fight to protect his teamates. I think his coach, Don Cherry, fthe same way about him. Cherry stated he'd start Wensink at left wing at the beginning of the game, just to let the other team know that liberties taken would not be tolerated. He may not have played for the Bruins as long as O'REILLY and some of their other enforcers, but while he was there, he sure was fun to watch. I respect O'Reilly and Jay Miller, they were cut from the same cloth, but throughout the years no guy on the team intimidated the other team and fought better than big John. He may have lost a few, but very few. He was the real deal.

For the Flyers:

Dave Brown, best fighter/policeman, Brown did this job better than anybody.
Behn Wilson, best skilled fighter, it's difficult to be a defenseman/enforcer.
Dave Schultz, best enforcer, Flyers don't beat the B's for the Cup without him.

I'm gonna disagree with you Jack. Buffalo has only had one heavyweight champion, and that was big Larry Playfair.

Ray had a long and distiguished career, fought and beat a ****-ton of folks, but noone has Ray in any alltime top 10, let alone top 5. You can make a top 5 all time argument for Playfair. And his reputation was made mostly in Buffalo.

Razor gets the HM here in my book.
