Great thread its sad to see what has happened to todays product, so watered down and nice nice, and anytime there is some roug and tough hockey, the league steps in its sickening. Your right were talking NHL hockey from 10 years ago, and Lindros was a fun player to watch, he REALLY was looking back
Its not all Bettman (he gets some blame for sure) but there are many factors including todays instant 24/7 media - anytime there is a big hit, its on the news loop 24/7 and every sport show and media outlet is talking 'how bad or dirty' the hit was There are many reasons for the changes, including society as a whole |

I compare it to auto racing.
Back in the day, there were tons of wrecks and guys died, regularly it seemed. The turn 4 wall at Indy has won more times than the Unsers, Foyt, or Castroneves combined but people don't call for an end to it. Concussions are a serious problem in every contact sport and maybe they can figure out some science to see who is prone to them more than others and not let those guys play or something. I think the NHL has gone too far in my opinion. One of the great draws of the game is the hitting and fighting, that's undeniable and as cool as it is to see a fast player make a dipsy doodle move around 2 dmen and top shelf a backhand while getting hacked, I'd rather see Lindros freight train 2 guys, pick up the loose puck and fire it past the goalie and then beat the crap out of the other dman left standing. We simply won't see that kind of play again because the league and the critics don't want it and if guys are suffering serious brain damage from elbows, pucks, sticks, and fists then maybe the game simply shouldn't be played at all or played with complete player safety in mind which is no hitting, no fighting, and full cage masks. That would suck for fans like us but it protects the players and as much as I want to see Bob Probert and Marty Mac slug it out for 2 full minutes, it's not worth it if they are dying as a result, even years later. I don't know what else to say.

Unfortunately the NHL has been subsumed into the "mother earth" ethos.
Whether it is the "sisification of the armed forces" by placing women in combat units, female firemen/cops/sanitation, CEOs. As has been stated Buttman is exactly what this "kinder softer" non paternalistic, lovey dovey, system needs to in essence bring the NHL in line...Look at the NFL with the pink shoes! Under the guise of "supporting breast cancer" not Prostrate cancer! We have metro-sexual tough-guys today as even they have fell sway to the movement to divest the NHL of the grit/passion/toughness that makes it attractive to a North American man. This "ethos" is everywhere and has affected every strata of society...The european socialist model is crushed with debt, they denounce the austere measures it will take to bring them out of the red, they whine, moan -------------This (USA) is not the country I grew up in nor is the NHL the bastion of tough grizzly lunch pail types that give you 110% despite a hangnail, "concussion", flu, etc...

I think it's here to stay, as much as we don't want it to. Remember there was a time in history - Roman era - where it wasn't considered a good sporting event if there werent several men beaten or mauled to death in an afternoon.
Unfortunatley we are on a never-ending drive to be what some view as more 'civilised', and physical hockey is the latest victim.

When I saw the title of this thread I immediately thought of the play that lead up to this brawl:
All the bad boys are on the ice and everyone is just taking runs at each other until it boils over into a wicked scrap between Cummins and Chase followed by a huge dog pile after Probie. Everyone gets into the action including goaltenders Cheveldae and Joseph. I don't know if there is a shift out there that I've seen that perfectly encapsulates the way fighting in hockey is to be used as a release valve for the tension on the ice quite like this one. I miss the days of guys like Lindros who really could do it all! |

Now, the mayhem is so subdued that when things do start to boil over, they simply throw the antagonists out of the game with misconducts.
When guys started running each other, you'd usually have a fight and things would cool down, most of the time. Not anymore, they don't let the guys fight if they can and instead, animosity grows and then the cheap shots start. Never a more perfect example than in last year's playoffs between Pitt and Philly. Guys were getting tossed left and right even if they hadn't done anything yet. League mandate. Thanks Buttman.

Nice vid, blocker. Gotta love how Cummins was defending Probert after Chase took a run at him. Great stuff!
Lindros was a monster! As a Sabres fan during the Legion of Doom era, I couldn't stand him. He dominated certain teams, and players couldn't match his strength. In the compilation, there are quite a few instances of #88 puttin' Scott Stevens on his back. We all know who got the last and most damaging hit in that series of battles. Lindros should be the poster boy for Keep Your Head Up!!

Can you imagine if Lindros would have done this under Shanaban's rule?

Just ask Lindros if the Stevens hit that more or less put him into retirement was anything like this one . He was a beast , but even a beast gets slaughtered ..
