You guys can hate on Clarke all you want but to me he will always be a winner. Was he the only guy taking shots at the Russians in 72'? No. The man took as many shots as he gave out and now that the cold war is over he is somehow a big villain. He was the heart and soul of the Flyers and he has the hardware to prove it.

Yeah I've written that about Clarke also. I've written that if the Rangers had Clarke as Team Captain from 1971-75, we might have won a few Cups! Ranger fans hated Turk Sanderson in the early 1970's and yet when he became a Ranger I didn't hate him anymore.
Same with Espo with his stinky turtleneck and sweeping the goddamn faceoff dot before the drop of the puck and his crying and bitc*ing all the damn time. I hated that guy and yet when he became a Ranger, he was one of ours!
My old man and I used to goof on Vadnais as Rangers would zoom past him and score and yet when he became a Ranger, his cheapshots and stickwork didn't seem as bad and he focused more on defense as a Ranger!
Same with Brashear now or Knuckles Nilan! Not always but normally you love the sweater and that carries you through!
Now when Domi suckered Ulf Samuellson, I didn't mind frankly so there are exceptions to the sweater rule!

I think if you were on the rteceiving end of ''BOY WONDERS'' 'S stick as the Russian was, you might have a different opinion of him. We all have our opinion of him. I could care less how much hardware the guy has, I put him in the category of being a dirty player. Being a BRUINS FAN THEN AND NOW, I put him in the same category I'd put Sanderson, Milbury, and McKenzie, as being good effective players, but players who were definetely dirty.

That fine but I have no pity for the Russians, then or now. Was he dirty, yeah, I will agree with that but to call him a coward I don't think so. Here is Espo talking about the Russians to get a Canadiens view.

Great clip and Herb Brooks called him Stan Laurel and was heard cursing him out in 1980. Espo is right and it's the crap we see today with the Europeans coming to the NHL. Good for Fergie to suggest to Clarke and good for Clarke for the broken ankle in 1972!
The Soviets were sneaky rat bastids and then cried when the Flyers were belting them around and ran off the Spectrum ice in 1976!
Big Jack applauding the Flyers, what is this?

Iwouldn't call any of the four guys I mentioned cowards, either. Any guy reaching the professional ranks in hockey is no coward in my book. Throughout the years I've seen the good, the bad, and the ugly, as players. I've never liked guys that played dirty whether they played for or against my team.

Rick Vaive hid behind the visor with that horse dick wrapped around his neck. Cheap-shot bastard.

Now Rick Vaive came to the Leafs in the beginning and fought alot, then he got married and when he was asked why he didnt fight anymore he responded with "my wife doesnt like me fighting"....

Not sure if you have specific instances where Vaive was cheap BUT I will say that in the years I saw him play in Toronto, he endured MORE ABUSE, game in and game out, than anyone else I have ever witnessed, infact I was going through an old tape last night and saw Dan Daoust (his old linemate) open him up with his stick when he came back to Toronto playing for Chicago, Vaive was no coward, if he was a coward?? he would have not lasted all those years.

He did alot of stick work with the Hawks. Then he hid behind the visor. Use to get to the Blues though and frustrate them.

Agree with you 100% about Acton, Jack. He'd always be right in front running his mouth but, when the heat went up, he always found his way to the back of the pack. At the same time, if a line brawl broke out, he'd be the first to jump on someones back, never face to face. I always wondered why nobody ever teed off on him when he did that.

I dont doubt it, he had more backup in Chicago than he ever did in Toronto and I could understandably see he probably got to a point where it was "I'm as mad as hell and I'm not gonna take it anymore"! in Vaive's case.

He was recently charged with DUI in Toronto and recently a good buddy told me how unhappy he was that Vaive had been hitting on his wife down at the ACC (lol).

Yeah at least a guy like McKenzie would drop his gloves sort of and be in the middle of it. Ok he had 5 Bruins jumping in for him but he was there. Guys like Linseman and Acton were just brutal.
One time Linseman almost caused a mini-riot between the Rangers/Flyers and everyone is scrapping and Barber is taking shots from Hospodar and Phil Esposito is doing the game and says, "look at the guy who still has his stick and he started it all" and of course it was Linseman. Jim Gordon's comment was that Linseman looked like Don Adams!

Could not agree more on whatīs been said about Keith Acton here. A true coward in every sense of the word. Unfortunately (for him) he once made the mistake of running his mouth a little too much in the vicinity of the Croatian madman John Kordic, and the result can be wieved in the following clip:

Brian Propp is another Flyer who deserves mention here. Check out this clip where he spears Russ Anderson of the Penguins in the throat and then when all hell brakes lose, Propp is nowhere to be found to accept the thrashing that he truly deserved. A coward, no doubt about it:
