Moving along.

Frustrated with the Smaller Tie Domi, Stu Grimson trips him and then tries the mounted haymaker.

GRIMSON - DOMI

=============

Similar situation here. Eric Lindros in this instance seems tired of beating up Matthew Barnaby, so he kicks his feet out and then goes for one last bomb while Barnaby is down.

LINDROS - BARNABY

People have to keep in mind that the frame-by-frame pictures are occurring at approximately 1/30th of a second. In other words, the individual pictures slow the action down and make the scene seem like its occurring over the course of perhaps minutes, but that bit that we're reviewing, from Cairns' looking away in the direction of Garth Snow, to Purinton zooming in from Cairns' left and suckering him in the face before he has time to react or get his gloves completely off, occurred in about two seconds.

Do YOU deny that Cairns is looking away from Purinton at the instant he gets ambushed, or that both of Purinton's gloves are on the ice while Cairns' gloves are both on his hands?
Yadda yadda.

- Cairns gloves were off when he got hit. Unless he randomly takes his gloves off on a regular basis this proves he knew something was about to go down.

- Not every fight starts with a square off. Purinton's first punch just happened to land on Cairns' glass jaw. If he missed then it would be completely ordinary and we wouldn't be having this discussion.

- The only reason you are upset about this is because it happened to an Islander.

- Purinton shouldn't have turtled in subsequent confrontations.

The end.

I have never forgotten this incident between Mark Janssens and that scumbag Shanahan. Janssens abused Shanny with a borderline TKO and the baby throws a huge cheap shot.

Not sure if it's Code related, but here's Dave brown going after a guy who rarely fought.
Kjell pulls hair, D Brown suckers Gould 87-88...

Martinson not giving LB a chance...
Bruins - Habs melee (Byers, Miller) 1/12/89 -...

Alan May suckers Jeff Chychrun after the linesman gets in there and skates off very quickly to avoid possible danger.
Maine - Hershey brawl AHL 12/11/87 - YouTube

Years later, Alan May gets suckered himself, courtesy of Sasha Lakovic. May was totally selling it though.
Lakovic suckers May (KO) IHL 96-97 - YouTube

It brings a smile to my face seeing all these breaches of the vaunted code. Makes me wonder if this is actually what the code is about as opposed to what we see today with limited emotion, everyone toeing the line and no one going over the edge. I have to admit- seeing a guy politely ask for a fight and skate away just as polite with a refusal-seems almost like that is against the "code". or at least in my book anyway. Thanks for the clips, guys.

This is what's wrong with hockey today!

Very well said Srehm1.

This thread is an excellent bridge for today's hockey fans to understand what they have been missing and why.

No hitting, no rivalries, no craziness, no cheapshots = no excitement.

Who decided there was a CODE? Who set up the boundries and rules?

These fights don't take place in a ring with a set time, set combatants, rules of engagement. If we wanted that, we can watch Boxing, UFC etc.

Hockey fights are supposed to be SPONTANEOUS. This is what makes them emotional, crazy, unpredictable and must see viewing.

What's ridiculous with hockey fights today?

1) Premeditated fights for no reason with no anger and with the same
circle of sparring partners.
2) Asking for a fight when you need to make it happen!
3) Patting a guy on the back after he punches you in the face 10 times.
4) Heavyweights fighting only heavyweights, middleweights fighting only
middleweights. If your mad and have a good reason, anyone is fair game.
5) Fighting someone who delivers a good clean body check instead of coming
back and delivering one of your own!
