Sean Avery Thread
With Avery's playing days seemingly over, I wanted to make a thread reflecting on his career. Nobody in the current era (post Barnaby) could piss a team off like Avery. As a disclaimer, I want to point out I generally hate Avery. However, you can't deny the animosity he brought to games, and thus becoming one of the most polarizing players in recent memory.
Here is an Avery moment that I enjoyed as a Bruins fan.
Here's a top 10 of Avery moments.
There's nobody like this left in the game, and as much as most of us hated him....he certainly could make any game entertaining.

I miss Avery, you could just see the impact he could have on the ice . . . . if only there was an uncensored miked up channel somewhere . . . . |

I know I'm in the minority, but I liked Avery a lot. He was entertaining plain and simple, on and off the ice. You wouldn't kow what the hell he was gonna do. He was punished for individualism and say what you will, between the diving, **** talking, stick swinging, and spot picking, when a game was on and he was playing, you noticed him and so did everyone else in the building, whether it was for a good thing or a bad thing, you knew he was there. I honestly wish every team had an "Avery".

Mic'd up, pretty funny stuff.
Sean Avery Really Didn't Want to "F@$&ing Kill Giroux" Last Night And then.. The Flyers and Rangers Hate Each Other, Simmonds Calls Avery a "F#$$ot" Which is also funny because in the video you can see Bickel literally tapping out to Sestito, and a faint sucker punch by Avery.

He was an interesting character and personality in a league and sport that doesn't have enough of it. But too often I found him to be just plain offensive and stupid, both on and off the ice, but there was never any shortage of things to talk about when he was at his best.
I still very much remember the "sloppy seconds" episode here in Calgary with Phaneuf. No body hated the Goof as much as I did when he was a Flame, and when I first read about Avery's sloppy seconds comments in print on the TSN web page I thought it was hilarious. But then I actually saw the video footage have him saying those things, and it was a whole different story - it came across as badly rehearsed white trash comedy, like he was trying too hard to get cheap and dirty laughs - he came across as mean, immature and childish, and not funny at all. As much as I hated The Goof, for a few minutes I actually felt sorry for him and his girl. I never saw Avery the same way again - although for better or worse, he always made things a little more interesting.

I hated the guys antics as well, but that is the type of player he was if he was on your team and not completely off the rails off the ice he was an effective player.
It's a shame for him that he couldn't stop being such as disruptive dickhead in his own locker room or he would have had a long career as a pest. What was the final straw in NY. I know he had plenty of chances

Funny thing is he had a lot of success vs my caps. Looked like he could be a useful and valuable player. The "sloppy seconds" comment got under my skin a bit but that's only perception. I mean there are guys in the league we like and admire that have slept with teammates wives etc.
The NHL used to thrive on having players opposing fans could hate and the chance they might get some vicarious retribution.

Good agitators bring so much to fans of physical hockey. Avery was definitely a great pest. But he appeared to be a locker room cancer on most teams he played on, like he wanted too much attention on himself. Rags fans will obviously disagree.
I love agitators (every team should have at least one), but dislike Avery. Not for his blatant diving, but for repeating what happens on ice, off ice - while it's still relevant. He can trash talk in the media all he wants (sloppy seconds), but when he goes and repeats what is said on the ice to try and get someone suspended, it's beyond being a pest, it's like a little tattle tale. Him telling the reporters Simmonds called him a f*g instead of just saying "I'm not sure what he said" is pretty disgraceful for a hockey player whether you are a fan of his or not. You don't even see Cooke, Kaleta, Ott, and other super pests doing that.

He took on Mitch Fritz during a nothing pre-season game I was at - looked about half the height and 3/5 the weight of Fritz. I have had nothing but respect for him since.
The off ice chatter is not a positive, but the on-ice Avery was very entertaining and provided a real character in a league which was trying to kill all individuality and personality - and effectively has so done. All the best. |

When he beat the sh*t out of Steve Ott in 2003... That was a great moment..
I can't find the whole fight, but it started at one end of the ice and ended on at the other end. Avery pretty much pounded on him the length of the ice. Here was the end of the fight.
