Robin Bawa vs Todd Gill - a TKO, really?
I keep reading that Gill dropped Bawa and after I went through the fights from the 92-93 Sharks DVD I finally found this gem. Anybody still says Gill drops Bawa here? Gill landed a flush left hand on the jaw but I didn't see Bawa going down. Gill throws a few more at him and takes him down at the end. Not only he wasn't dropped, he threw punches at Gill from his back!
Bawa wasn't a very good fighter, atleast in the NHL level as he lost his fight against Russell clearly before going out with a draw against Loewen in his last Sharks fight. But he is credited with two TKO losses while in reality, he just lost clearly. Here is the video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature...&v=YYRtphQ_NZQ |

Tough call, that left landed hard and absolutely bang on and clearly stunned Bawa. In fact till he switched to the left Gill was getting the worst of that fight. I guess it all depends on what your definition of a hockey TKO is right? Gill was a killer for his size though, criminally underrated by times.

Forgot to thank Zoli for Uploading that fight. Thank you sir, always appreciate additions like this!

If it wasn't for Bawa throwing a punch from the ice I would definitely say TKO but it is hard to make that call. Other than the punch from the ice I think you are off on a couple things.
I think that saying Gill threw a few more after the punch is misleading because it implies that the fight went on. That punch did end the fight. I don't think Gill took down Bawa. If anything I think Gill slowed Bawa's descent to the ice. Gill held him up a little with his right arm. Tough to score but you have to call it and I say TKO. Either way, great question and video. Thanks! |
Great fight!

1) Bawa threw another punch from the ground. 2) Bawa could continue. 3) Bawa got right up without assistance. The punch put him down but it was a KNOCKDOWN not a TKO. |
I would call it a "flash" knockdown. Would he have gone down without that punch? No way ..was it the punch that dropped him ? Yes. But a TKO means he should be stunned and temporarily unable to defend himself..Bawa seemed unhurt. But I wouldn't argue much with someone that thought it was a TKO.

I don't know if calling that a TKO is too harsh or not but that last left that landed by Gill definatly was a Stunner

Don't see many of "Pillow Puncher" Bawa's fights. A knockdown for sure, not a knock-out.

Clear win for Gill, not a TKO.

Yea sure Bawa "could have continued", lol...getting his face punched in on the ice. He was unable to defend himself from the punch that put him down, had it gone on Gill would have left him a plasmic, unconcious heap. What Todd Gill did there was flawlessly switch hands and end the fight with the first punch on the switch, no one did it better, Bawa had 30 lbs on him to boot, this thread should really be called "The Beauty of Todd Gill". Perhaps the best pound for pounder to ever play, this guy was 175lbs FFS!! |

A lot of us have learned to be wary when you describe fights certain fighters have. I know that when you start talking about Wendel Clark, Bob McGill or Todd Gill fights that haven't been seen by almost everyone it's best to find another source. I hate to say it, but I just can't take your word on anything when it comes to these guys. Especially when it comes to phantom fights you claim to have happened that no one else can actually verify. It's as if you are trying to pad their records or something. It's not fair, but stuff like this makes it so that I start to resent these guys: "....had it gone on Gill would have left him a plasmic, unconcious heap." Zoli linked it up and everyone sees it here so the video renders your biased claim and ridiculous embellishment worthless. Just stop doing it. You're better than that |
Ewen, most of the guys here denying the beauty of this bout?? I dont know, I dont wake up early to read their post's... one of the few guys who's posts I love reading said here "I wouldnt argue with anyone who called it a "TKO", that's solid enough for me, combined we have over 70 years of being a hockey fan and watching thousands of fights and hundred's of punches that put fighters to the ice.... You have your usual "supporter", same guy who supports anyone who takes up an issue with me, if he thinks it bothers me?? he's wrong, I've come to expect it from the branch dangler.
This was no case of 'momentum making him fall', its plain as day the guy went down like he was shot as soon as he took the punch....any fool can see this. How can anyone say Bawa wasnt dropped from that punch?? The punch ended the fight bottom line, in Boxing ?? a KD or "knock down", usually means the fighter continued, the Zebra's stepped in to "save" Bawa" when he went down, like they always are required to and to save him from further punishment, which would have happened.... if you ask me?? he was done or in serious trouble. That was a beautiful punch that put Bawa down, I'm glad it has showed up on the net. |

My assessment will echo Pesa's, that left drilled Bawa and Gill was the only thing holding Bawa up after the punch. I think it's safe to say that if Gill hadn't been holding on to him, he would have gone right down, that was a killer left from Gill. I'm not sure where anyone gets the idea that Gill wrestled him to the ice. It's called gravity failing Robin Bawa. ;)
Since the punch obviously hurt Bawa and the refs jumped in to stop it, that's a TKO in my book as Bawa was obviously hurt by the punch and yes, he could have continued, many TKO's in hockey or boxing are very subjective decisions, the guy might be able to continue but is clearly hurt or on the defensive and/or can't defend himself from further punishment, that's why the linesmen jump in when they feel a fighter is no longer able to put up a good fight/defend himself. I don't think one needs to be woozy or whatever to be TKO'd. Because the words KNOCK and OUT appear after the word technical, it doesn't mean you have to be KNOCKED OUT, it's a technical knockout which means you can still be standing up but might be hurt, see Brashear getting drilled by Macintyre in the ribs as a perfect example of a "standing" TKO. I know all don't agree on the definition but I think it's pretty cut and dry what the definition is but quite often a fight will leave you wondering if it was a TKO and this one was, win Gill by TKO. |
