The Old Jersey over the Head Routine!

Two tough guys are having at it. One gets the other guys jersey over his head and starts whaling away on him!

There will be no pats on the back after this fight because its NOT the NEW NHL, this is old time hockey and they are out for blood and to win at all costs!

A fight that comes to mind involves Dave Hoyda of the Philadelphia Flyers and Willi Plett of the Atlanta Flames. Its the playoffs and their going at it in a fierce brawl. All of a sudden, Plett gets Hoyda's jersey over his head and lays a dandy on him.

When you think of great punches and fights with a guys jersey over their head, who do you think of? Do tell!

The Marathon bench clearer. I watched that the other night. Some serious beatdowns, Bridgman on Logan, Daily on Gillis etc. Hanlon was a pretty good fighter for a goalie!

Nothing specific but Domi was very good at doing this, and than whaling away on guys. I never had any problem with that either. Wasn't it on his OHL stuff where he jerseyed a guy than said to the bench, "Is that the best you have" before just destroying the guy.

John Kordic did a few times as well, at least once against Miller if my memory serves me correctly. I'd have to check that, but I'm pretty sure it's right.

Grimson would also use this move occasionally and was very effective with it - I remember he tuned up Darren Langdon pretty good once, and Langdon rarely took a big loss.

One of the most memorable and ironic ones i think of featured a young Eric Cairns who had a decidedly shaky chin and undersized Kelly Chase. Cairns got chase' jersey over his head and pushed up straight against the boards. He put a few good shots on him until the blinded chaser buckled his knees.

It was funny because he could have easily have finished him off if he could've only seen him. Really hard fight to score.

The funny thing about Domi was he would somtimes pull the jersey up over a guys head the front way. I recall him doing this to probert. usually you see a guy get jerseyed the other way-with the back of the jersey being pulled over the back of the head. With Domi he had this way of pulling it up over the front. Great move!

As it pertains to this thread-the old 'pull the jersey over the head and wail away' bit was a classic old school move. One of the reactions to this was simply shedding the jersey all together, thus foiling this classic gambit.

I'm sure the 'code' thumpers on here will look at this menuever in horror and call it unfair or a cheap advantage! Old school win-at-all-cost mentaility of a bygone era!

Boulerice on Worrell stands out. Boulerice pounded the fuk out of him once he got the jersey over, pretty one-sided. Boulerice was pretty god with the jersey pull, I recall him getting Stephen Peat pretty pissed off over it as he started firing lefts back as it was being broken up.

I think it was easier for Domi to push the front of his opponents jersey over his face, than it was for him to grab the back of the jersey and pull it over his head cuz obviously Domi was fighting guys taller than him.

Great move tho, and Domi was the first I thought of for this thread. Have seen other smaller fighters pull this move off too.

Valeri Kamensky (of all people) has a different "jersey over the head" method.

The only thing I don't like about the move is that it ends the fight. I could appreciate Grimson - Langdon because that was the end of a long fight. Though I think Grimson did it to him a second time because Langdon cried about it the first time. I hate it at the start of the fight like when Cairns did it to Brashear.
