Get aload of the top scorers like Orr, Hull, Esposito and also get aload of Rogie Vachon's GAA with the puny equipment used then and also the fact that Vachon was 5'7" and 165 lbs!
The goalies were great then and never get the credit they deserve because they could have GAA's like a Vachon of under 1.40 for 7 games and be wearing almost nothing! Why are today's goalies considered to be so great when they are all 6'3" and wear suits of armour that block half the net and they are so protected that they all use the butterfly and play low to the ice and dare the shooters to shoot high?

That was the type of guy that Orr was!
He came back in 1978 and as Maggie wrote played in 6 games scoring 4 points and that was that and he was officially done at age 30. In reality, his career ended at age 27 in 1975! Playing in the Canada Cup in the summer of 1976 is probably the final thing that ended any hopes of being healthy in Chicago. Orr was so amazing that playing on basically one leg and against Doctor's orders, he led Team Canada in scoring and was voted the Team's MVP. I remember Bobby Clarke saying that he could barely walk and wouldn't practice and all he did was ice his legs and then come game time would suit up and play and it was the most guttiest thing that Clarke said he ever saw!
Orr on one leg played 26 games in Chicago from 1976-78 and scored 6 goals and 27 points on a low scoring Black Hawk team. Think about that! One leg, pain none of us could even imagine and yet over a point a game!
Unreal!

I'll see if I can find something about that 1976 Canada Cup and Orr's courage!

bigjack : if I remember right Bobby Clark also said " on one leg Bobby Orr was better then any player on the ice in the 76 Canada Cup" on any team , thank god he was playing for us !!!!!

When the Boston Bruins used to hold their training camp in London Ontario I never missed a practice , went out on the town a few times with some of the boys , they thought it was hilarious because I look so much like Johnny Bucyk I could be his twin , in fact they took to calling me "CHIEF TWO" , that was Derek Sanderson's idea .
I got to know Orr real well , years after , when he became a player agent , he used to scout prospects at the London Gardens , he always sat with Bob Mantha's wife (London's coach) who always sat with us , we used to act as his protection from autograph seekers while the game was on , during periods he signed every on he could , a better person you never met ....

Notice how most of the shots were on net and we saw tip in's, deflections, a great one timer from Bobby Hull, and some great saves with no suits of armour and goalies playing the old stand up style and playing the angles!

Pete LoPresti never played that good for Minnesota!

A little Fergie flavor never hurts!

The Interview

I remember an interview Bobby Orr was giving Bruce Beck on MSG Network between periods of a Rangers game. Orr had been retired for a while and I'm not certain why he was in New York at that time. This particular format allowed callers to phone in and ask questions or make comments live. Apparently the producers of this segment forgot to install a delay button. One fan called in to talk to Bobby. The call went like this: "Hello this is Bruce Beck. Do you have a question or comment for Bobby Orr?" Fan: "Yes. Bobby I just wanted to say that I think you are the greatest player who ever lived." Orr laughing: "Thanks, my father thinks the same thing." Fan: "And Bruce I think you are the biggest asshole who ever lived." The frozen look apon the faces of both of them was priceless.

fan,

You remember correctly.

In his last three years in the league, including the 10 games with the Bruins before coming to the Hawks, look at this.

Games-36
Goals- 11
Assists- 34
Points- 45
PIM- 51

Not bad for a one legged man.

You can only wonder what kind of numbers he could have put up if healthy. Jack had a good point. Effectively, he accomplished all of his numbers in just 9 and 1/2 seasons.

Thanks for the personal touch fan, good stuff.

Maggie here was the classic game 6 in 1971. It was great seeing Tim Horton and of course this Ranger joy was shortlived as game 7 was on a Sunday back in Chicago and with the game tied 2-2 in the 3rd period, Bobby Hull blasted a shot off the faceoff over Giacomin's shoulder for a 3-2 Chicago lead and they would add an empty net goal and win 4-2!
I was living in Massachusetts and man that game 7 hurt a 9 year old!

Maggie enjoy this treat! Does 1961 ring a bell?

Love that everyone understands just how great Orr was. He was the reason I became a hockey fanatic. Clarke always talked about how Orr was the best and marveled at how much courage it took to play in that 76 series. Only that dick Potvin could write a journal and cry that Orr didn't deserve the MVP, that he only got it because of his reputation. This prick actually believed he was on Orr's level. It was great when the season started even his own teammates told him what a jerk he was. Remember Nystrom saying Orr is the best player in every game so how could he not deserve the MVP.
THE BEST EVER.

Thanks for blasting Potvin! At MSG it's been "Potvin Suc*s" for 30 years now and for his 1976 actions and selfishness the phrase just fits! The other MSG chant is "beat your wife Potvin, beat your wife" for how it was shown in court how he treated his first wife Debbie if I recall her name correctly!
Potvin was not respected early on by his teammates on the Island because he was so overly a braggart and jackoff! There wasn't a humble bone in his body and he acted like his sh*t didn't stink.
Potvin was a hell of a player but Bobby Orr-NO, NOT EVEN CLOSE!

As you well know I have been around for a few years !!!and hope to be around for a few more ..

I have seen some of the greatest players that ever put on a pair of skates play the game "LIVE" !!!

Just to name a few , Gordie Howe , Maurice Richard , Bobby Hull , Doug Harvey , Tim Horton , Larry Robertson , Brian Trottier , Mike Bossy , Mark Messier , Wayne Gretzky and have watched some of the young stars develop , Crosby , Ovechkin , Malkin , Nash , Getzlaf , Perry , Mason , Kane ,Towes , now thats a pretty good list of talent , but not one of them can control the tempo of the game !!!

BOBBY ORR COULD !!!!

If he wanted the game to go slow , he just slowed down the pace , if he wanted it to speed up he just skated a little faster , when he just took complete control and decided that the puck was his , no-one could catch him to take it away from him he was that fluid a skater .

I know a lot of the young crowd have never seen him play , not even on tape , believe me when I say no player in the last 50 years has even come close to what he could do on the ice , I know , I have been their to watch the game evolve ..

If ever one comes along that can do even two thirds of what he could do on the ice you are in for the thrill of your lifetime and will tell your grandchildren you have seen the greatest player of your life or any one's else's life play the game .

THE GREATEST EVER IS AN UNDERSTATEMENT < HE IS PROBLEY THE GREATEST THAT EVER WILL HAVE PLAYED THE GAME >>>>>

JUST MY OPINION ...

Well said and so true. He is the best ever and as a defenseman and his like we will never see again. He had the complete package and also took his hits and abuse like a man and not some whiner who was protected and couldn't be touched! Just for that alone most of the greats of the last 30 years or so lose many points.
The one superstar who always took the abuse and never whined and came back for more was Bossy. He'd be seen scoring goals with his helmet sideways for chrissakes and he also paid for it with a bad back and retiring at age 31. Bossy was against fighting and didn't drop the mitts like Orr did so he also wasn't a total package but Bossy had major courage and never hid behind guys like Gretzky did or cried everytime he was touched and looked for an academy award!
They say a Doug Harvey controlled the tempo similar to Orr but I am too young to offer that opinion. Perhaps our more experienced posters can offer what Harvey brought to the table. From most accounts he was the best defenseman ever before Orr but Harvey was no Orr and noone was or is!

Bobby has said his game was patterned after the great Doug Harvey , who was the first offencive defense-man , he just improved on what Harvey did from the defense position because he was a much better skater ...

Thanks for the video and the memories Jack.

How well I remember the 1971 season and the Rangers series. I can relate to your heart break. We were able to win game 7 in the semi's, only to suffer the same fate you did in the finals.

I was 26, had not seen the Hawks win a Cup since 1961, and after the Rangers series, thought we were on our way. I have mentioned that I missed 6 years from 1965 to the 1970-71 season. The excitement for me was huge.

I missed the Finals loss in game 7 to Montreal in the 64-65 season, and the runs they made to the semi's. I was really ready, thinking that the 70-71 team was one of our best.

It was against Montreal, again in game 7 that we lost in the Finals. A blast by Lemaire from above the right face off circle goes by in second to let Montreal in the game. The score was 2-0 at the time. After that goal you could feel the game slipping to Montreal. Henri Richard scored the last 2 goals to finish it off.

Tight ass Wirtz did not put the game on TV and could not get tickets. Watched on closed circuit. I was stunned. I cried.

Jack, Hull actually wore the 16 until the end of the 1962 season. He switched to number 9 to honor his idle, Gordie Howe.

Ironically, Bobby Hull wore the #16 sweater with Hartford in 1980, when he played with Marty, Mark, and Gordie Howe. Also, a fellow by the name of Fotiu

Trivia. in the 1961-62 season he was struggling and was wearing #16. The Hawks trainer "Gonzo" gave him #7 to wear to change his luck.

Tod Sloan wore #9 in 58 through 1961.
