I saw history made on Sunday.
On Sunday, 27 January 2013, the Chicago Blackhawks did something for the first time in the history of their franchise. The stage was set and the pressure was on. We were facing our bitterest rival, the Detroit Red Wings. It would be game number 762 between these two storied franchises, members of the Original Six. As fans of either team would tell you, any victory against each other is a little sweeter, that’s what made this victory even more special. For the first time in the 86 year history of the Chicago Blackhawks, a team won its first six games in a row. To do so in this compacted season, having played four of those first six games on the road, and to have it happen in overtime, really makes this special for the team and its fans. As I wrote in the Blackhawks thread, contrary to popular belief by some of our posters, I was not their for that first puck drop 86 years ago. I had school that day.

The Hawks finally lost in "OT" , but are still undefeated in reg time ..
PS :: To my surprise I find myself following the NHL closer than I ever did , it just could be that every game I have watched so far has that playoff sense of urgency to it , the hockey has been great so far ..

You kind of hit the nail on the head regarding the hockey so far this season. Everyone I have talked to about this season has said it's almost like every game is a playoff game. The intensity and focus of playing more games in a shorter period of time and having fewer days between games has definitely given us a different, and I think, better brand of hockey. It does create the sense of urgency you mentioned. One of the by products of this shortened season seems to be more fights. As each game is more critical, all teams look to be fighting harder, literally, to win or be competitive in each and every game. A lot of those people I talked to felt the same as many here did about boycotting or having little interest in the NHL this year. Every one of those people have changed their mind. All cite the fact that it seems there is different brand of hockey this season. As far as I'm concerned, I would rather see fewer games, with less time between games, if each season would give us this quality of hockey.

I still wont wear anything that has an NHL logo on it , or purchase anything to do with the NHL , all my NHL jerseys and jackets have retired for the season , that is my way of protest for the lockout , my wife thinks I am nuts , because all my jackets are one of a kind leather that she paid a lot of money to have made ...

Since we have opened the door regarding the fan base coming back to the NHL and supporting your team, let's get some more input.
What are your feelings about the new season? What do you think about the brand of hockey you have seen so far? Has the quality, or lack of it, made you come back or convinced you to stay away? What about fan's point of not wearing or buying team goods. Let's see what your feelings are. Post and discuss.

But I refuse to wear any thing with an NHL logo , purchase any thing from any NHL team , or go to a NHL game even if the tickets are "FREE" !!! My displeasure with the lockout is still real deep , I just cant get it out of my system and probley wont for the rest of the shortened season . I just cant justify giving the greedy basards any of my money ..

FF, Despite the record, which I know is hard to overlook, what is your feeling about the game? Like I mentioned: What are your feelings about the new season? What do you think about the brand of hockey you have seen so far? Has the quality, or lack of it, made you come back or convinced you to stay away? Mike, bustoff, Blues 34, fish7, Killah..............what about you guys? You certainly have feelings about this, and about coming back to the game. Let's here it. P.S. All posters are welcome to post on this, whatever your feelings are.

Mags, I don't blame the Blues owner at all for the lockout so it was easy to come back to the game. Love the quality of play as it's a sprint instead of a marathon. Fighting is up due in part teams trying to establish themselves in games, dictating who has the advantage. Part of it could be the players elevating their play due to the fans being pissed off about the lockout. Can't wait till the Blues and Hawks meet again.

Good stuff, bustoff.
I don't blame the Hawks ownership on this one either. For the first time since 1959 I can say that. "Dollar Bill", him I could blame for Global Warming for all the hot air that came out of his mouth. I made it clear from the start that I am going to go to games once the season got underway. In fact, the new Hawk management, once the schedule was set, did every thing they could regarding tickets and games.

I had no problems about watching hockey again after the lockout. It was a fight. Instead of dropping the gloves, the two sides fought over money. Now the fight is over. |

But I digress - I gave hockey a chance last week and watched the Oilers play the Kings on TSN. Watching Yakupov's excessive goal celebration when he tied that game up stirred some emotion in me, and for the first time in years I actually got some goosebumps. Seeing that kid slide down the ice and hearing that rink erupt got me excited for hockey again and all of a sudden I began to remember exactly why I became fan back in the late 1980s. I've been watching more and more where I can, and the Canucks/Hawks game the other night - while a stinker - was the first one I watched all the way through from beginning to end. Its still a work in progress, but slowly I'm starting to forgive, but I'll never forget exactly how much dirt and filth the NHL has kicked in my face in the last 20 years - and the NHL won't get one dime out of me in terms of merchandise, tickets, etc for quite some time to come. But I'm tuning in again, and thats a step....
