He had the skills to be the best, strength, balance, could fight with both hands, etc but is willingness is in question since he tanked more fights than Don King, he fought not to lose, he didn't like getting hit, and that was his style which makes him not as good as the 6 fighters I have ranked above him. If he was more aggressive, he might not have lasted as long but he would have a better legacy. His goofy on ice antics, the cheap shots, the bullying, and his attitude make him a clown and a joke. His bailing on fights, seatbelting, etc make him a loser despite his "great card" and "sparkling record". Doesn't mean shyt to me compared to Brown, Wilson, and Probert among others who weren't loud mouth goons on and off the ice. He gets no respect from other players so why should he get it from me?

What I'm asking is why you have Laraque ranked higher, when the majority of your criticisms of Brashear (boring fighting, hugging, takedowns, etc) apply to Laraque just as much. As well as Laraque being 'dominant' for a less amount of time, being too 'polite', and not enforcing or pushing the issue with other fighters. To me that doesn't make sense, and I'm curious why you feel that way.

If I remove fairness as a category, Brash is still in the top 10 all time. I think I've been very fair with Brashear in rating him. No, I don't like him or his style but that's only relevant in discussions here, it had nothing to do with my rankings. I think everyone in the top 10 is a great fighter. Probert, Brown, Wilson, Laraque, Brash, McKenzie, Kocur, Playfair, McSorely, McCarthy, they are all great and any of them could beat another on any given night so top 10 is the Hall of Fame for hockey fighters and maybe even the top 20 but it gets a lot grayer there as guys in the 2nd 10 have less chance of winning against the first 10 but could definitely pull the upset. The 1st 10 are the consistent winners, the guys you'd always put your money on to come out on top.

Wasn't Behn Wilson the guy whom - while playing for Chicago - got his ass kicked by Probert (Red Wing at the time)?
THAT was a freakin' classic fight. I remember seeing the Detroit feed...I remember they went to ads, then came back and Mickey Redmond is really excited, "We're back! We're back and everything has broken loose!"...pretty entertaining. |

No. They never fought really, they held on to each other and got double roughing penalties.

I remember when he fought Brad Delgarno (NYI)...it was the NY feed and Kocur was hitting Delgarno...announcer called Kocurs punches "No telling blows"....that's until they realized Joey had broken the guys helmet as well as his eye-socket. Delgarno retired soon after that game. He destroyed Link Gaetz in the 1/9/90 fight. Maybe the hardest puncher ever. (Just joshing ya' about your list) |
