Well, Phillydog has taken a few shots already, and I hate to add to it, but before I praise him, I have to say that Lindsay, Tiger, Cashman, Hunter, Peluso and even Schultz are... well... "interesting" picks ! Being a Chicagoan, I especially get a kick out of Peluso's name here. I want to praise Phillydog for his #13 pick... Larry Robinson. Here's a guy who deserves to be on more top 20 lists. Sure, he didn't have a quantity of fights, but he was a great fighter, and hardly anyone gives him the credit he deserves. Great choice, Philly! Why is Dale Hunter on so many recent lists? Why is it that the great Dan Maloney is left off everyone's lists these days? You'd think a heavyweight champ of the early 70's would easily fit somewhere on a list of 20. And to a lesser degree, I'm surprised the name Curt Fraser doesn't appear more often. |

Your above statement... "Gordie Howe was one of the very best fighters of all time." Most of the "best ever" fighters can be supported with documentation of 40, 50 or more fights they won. I have a question. Outside of the Fontinato fight, could you please inform me of 5 other fights Howe had where he won? Actually, I'll make my question easier... give me just 3. Thanks ! |

1. Bob Probert - no question
2. Dave Brown - more dominant than Wilson, less than Probert 3. Behn Wilson - Lots of good wins, but not as many fights as other greats 4. Bob Nystrom - beat Playfair, Fotiu, and several others, great hands 5. Donald Brashear - still a dominant force, has beat everyone from his era practically 6. Marty McSorley - in the same boat as Brashear; has fought guys from 3 eras! 7. Joey Kocur - being a duo with Probert hurt his wins totals probably, but still had a great right and a lot of fear factor 8. Clark Gillies - when he did fight, one of the best ever 9. Larry Playfair - very hard puncher, but didn't have enough great wins in my mind ↓. Nick Fotiu - beat a lot of guys solidly, but didn't fight nearly enough 11. Tie Domi - barely outside of the top 10, but with further evaluation, might move up ↓. Tony Twist - the second coming of kocur and probert, only in one guy. Career was cut short, but did squeeze in several nice wins 13. John Kordic - Lightining left hands and a great 80's fighter 14. Stan Jonathan - too good of a fighter to be left out of top 15 and up ↓. Terry O'Reilly - 2-3 against Gillies, fought Wilson, Playfair, Schultz, etc. and beat several other great fighters 16. Tim Hunter - fought against and beat Dave Brown, which is enough to make my list. Also fought lots of other guys, won, had a great chin, and great technique ↓. Stu Grimson - fought in a tough era, but endured and beat a lot of guys handily 18. Georges Laraque - he has won too many fights against tough guys to be left out. Is the current NHL HW champ and has the reputation too. Only slight is his default champ status 19. Chris Nilan - I hate this guy, but he fought for many years and won or drew most of his fights. hangs on a little too much for my taste, but he was still a great fighter 20. Dave Semenko - fought only about 110 times, but fought with purpose and was feared. Beat many other tough guys from his era HM: Craig Berube, Jay Miller, Gino Odjick, Sandy McCarthy, John Wensink, Glen Cochrane, Wendel Clark; not in that order ps. ↓ = going down lower soon after an update changes will be coming soon

I think that guys like Fraser and Maloney suffer from lack of footage. I know Fraser was tough but I honestly can say I did not see much of him. Was it because he played in Vancouver and there is a lack of footage of him? As far as Maloney goes, well I have some fights of his later in his career and it certainly would not be fair to rate him based off those. I do agree though that if a guy was the champ of a certain era, then he should be mentioned in more top 25 lists.

Here we go... based upon all at their very best on one night.
1] C. Gilles - This from a Ranger fan 2] B. Wilson - bias to the older guys and Flyers [even Hoyda beat NY up] 3] Probert - the man 4] Kocur - as a wing, lost toughness at MSG, Jim Kyte fight was scary! 5] J. Kordic - quick and mean circa 1986 6] P. Laus - one bad cat 7] P. Worrell - another bad cat 8] D. Kimble - think he is vastly underated, quick and heavy hitter 9] L. Gaetz - for one brief shinning moment. 10] Dave Brown - like Kocur, very scary when he was throwing. Tough list - I can see Brown wasting all but Probert, but I can also see the 1986 Kordic beating Brown and Laus dropping him. Also, I think that the current guys are more solid with technique and feel that Laraque probably has a place here. Perhaps someone should start a "most entertaining" list? |

I don't understand why Laraque isn't on more lists. The guy doesn't lose. Marty McSorley? I've hardly seen a fight of his where he isn't bleeding. How could you possibly rate him above Twist, Laraque, Brashear? Marty would get it handed to him by all of those guys.

As for his status, you cant deny that he is one of the greats. He fought guys like Playfair, Gillies, etc. 80s guys like Kocur, Probert, etc., and 90s guys like Domi, Brash, etc. He won against most and had a chin and endurance that is unrivaled. He didn't have KO power but he certainly had KD and TKO power. I used to not rank him high because I didn't like him, but you can't deny this guy top 10 status. He was just to effective for too many years. He lost to Brashear 6x, but he still hung in there. He probably would have mopped the floor with the young Laraque, but I'm not so sure how he would do with today's "BGL"/Spin-Cyle-Takedown-Laraque. As for Twist, I'm pretty sure he would have owned Twist. Marty could take Kocur and Probert's punches, and Twist wasn't that much of a greater puncher. Twist also had suspect balance and endurance, so I would give the edge to Marty. As for comparing careers. Brashear's career is slightly more impressive, giving him a one spot edge over Marty. IMO Marty has a better career than both Twist and Laraque, and they are both Top 20 on my list.
