THE Nick Fotiu thread
Lately it seems like every topic in this forum has been transformed somehow to a Fotiu thread. No more. From now on, this thread will be the place to write about Fotiu... Whether you like him, hate him, have sweet memories or fond hatred of the player. Now granted this won't contain all of Fotiu, but from now on, 98% of all things Fotiu start and end here.
I'll start it: Nick Fotiu, with his 60 NHL fights, isn't worth this much discussion. Look at his fight card, it's "iffy" at best. A great deal of his competition were tomato cans or third rate guys. He took losses to the better guys he faced, had a good showing against an all timer in Behn Wilson, and mostly was a non factor on the scoreboard as well with his 137 points in 646 games. Yes he stood up to the Flyers. Yes he provided lots of pucks to the crowd, and much blustering behind linesmen. And every once in awhile (about every 12 games give or take) he would take on a Ed Kea, Lee Fogolin, Richard Mulhern, Jim Cunningham (who he had to cross check in the face, and knee in the face), Darren Veich, etc.... He looks like a giant spot picker when you look at his fight card. Maybe this won't be a popular opinion, and I'm always open to new arguments... but you'll have to do a lot of convincing. Over/Under on this thread going 50 pages? |

If Fotiu was over exaggerated then I don't know what that makes the Broad Street Bullies. The toughest team ever and yet Fotiu found a way to go 7-1 against them. Where was the answer from the Flyers if Fotiu was picking on such non fighters? Where was the response for picking on this poor teenager Behn Wilson? It was a close scrap though until Fotiu got that big bucket off of Wilson's head. The Flyers were obviously the main reason for Fotiu being a Ranger and he did that job pretty well. He lacked the motivation overall to put himself into any alltime discussions though.
This clip has been posted before and since we are speaking of "blustering behind linesmen", it is obvious on the clip to anyone watching without bias that Wilson turns his head from Fotiu when they finally meet up. Big Behn refuses to look him in the eye until there is a linesman there and then he turns to put on a show. Fotiu had his eye on Wilson from the beginning as you could see when he turns to see him holding another Ranger. Fotiu yells at him before making his way around the pile to confront him. Fotiu also made his way around without a linesman at the one minute mark and Wilson again would not pay him any attention. Nicky even gave him a bump and a tug. Times like this I wish Nicky was more aggressive and would have just pounded the guy that clearly didn't want to fight but wanted to get mouthy when there was a linesman there.

Just stop already with the exaggerations, the Broad Street Bullies were traded, old and washed up by the time Fotiu came on the scene. He never faced the real BSB in their prime, just stop with the BS. Fotiu went 7-1 against non-fighters or average MW's, and rookies, not the real BSB. I give you this, he had Holmgren's number but Holmgren was not the Flyers enforcer, he was a goal scorer who could fight. Fotiu spotpicked his way around the league, end of story. This is exactly the kind of BS overexaggerated hype that only comes out of the BS factory in New York.
The Isles won 4 Cups stomping Fotiu's head into ice in the process, Fotiu did nothing, the Rangers won nothing, Fotiu got ran over. He faced Gillies many times and did nothing, ditto Wensink and the Bruins. Stop with Fotiu phoney stories, he was madly in love with himself. Everybody was scared to death of Fotiu, that's the BS reason he avoided many enforcers. Just stop. |

That clip might be more overrated than Fotiu! Absolutely nothing happens there that indicates that Wilson is afraid of Fotiu. They don't engage, so what? Look at Wilson's card - he fought Fotiu as a rookie. In a shorter career as a very good defenseman, he fought more often against much better competition.
Look how many times Fotiu has dropped the gloves and not engaged. I can literally think of a half dozen including this one against McSorely:

You can't have it both ways. Claiming guys like Cashman, Wilson and O'Reilly were backing down. What was Fotiu doing by not engaging Wensink, McSorely and a host of others? And Pesa, I've addressed the Cunningham fights before with regards to your 7-1 comment. The first fight Fotiu cross checks him in the face out of nowhere and than drops the gloves. In the second fight it's basically a draw than Fotiu headbutts him twice. No wonder the guy's nose was broken! Funny thing that Fotiu likes fighting Flyers rookies so much as well:
Lord knows what he did in the third fight? Try to hit him with his skate? So in that big 5 fight year against the Flyers in 1978-1979, he fought 2 rookies a total of 4 times. Wilson once in a good one, the two cheap ones and a unknown third one against Cunningham and a good win against Holmgren. His other Flyers fights were against Al Hill (rookie straight from the WHL with a fight card feauting Tim Friday, Rick Zombo, Benoit Brunet and Mike Bullard)... And his other fight was against Orest Kindrachuk. Color me unimpressed. Fighting rookies and tomato cans. |

Yes he beat Craig Coxe. A Rookie Craig Coxe (notice the penchant he had for fighting rookies?). Craig Coxe who was known for his entertaining wide open style and the fact he lost more than he won.
Coxe did manage to have as many NHL fights in 411 less games though. |
