I personally like Mario and would go with him, but Serge is very underrated and at the AHL had lots of tough guys so he went unnoticed |

I'd have to go with Serge Roberge on this one. The guy was very skilled, could go technical, and very well could have stuck in the NHL if he had been given the opportunity. A legendary minor league career none the less.
Always enjoyed his battles with Mel Angelstad. |

Very tough call as they were both pretty rugged individuals - arguably the two toughest brothers to ever play and fight in professional hockey. Mario was as technically sound as Serge with regards to switching hands, and fighting "smart," because he HAD to be. He wasn't a very big man but incredibly strong. Serge was more of a wingnut, and would be prone to losing it alot easier than Mario, which I liked. You never knew what you were going to get from Serge, he could be vicious on the ice.
I'll never forget one night the Fredericton Canadiens were playing the PEI Senators at the Charlottetown Civic Centre, (back when we had season tickets) and Darcy Simon (captain of the Sens) was their tough guy and had been battling with both Roberge brothers all night - one of the few stints in their careers when they were playing together on the same team. Simon had drilled Mario with a hard hit that Serge didn't like, so Serge came off the bench and cross-checked Simon in the teeth, breaking his stick over Simon's face, then hitting him while he was down on the ice. Wild scene. He'd probably get life if he did it today, but I can't remember if he was suspended on the play. They asked Mario who was tougher, and he said that Serge was easily, so I'll stick with his answer.

I think Serge was much tougher than Mario, who was no slouch.

Easily Serge. Watched him live many times and he was one of the best all around fighters i`ve ever seen. He could just as easily fight open as he could technical. Technically he may be the best i`ve ever seen. His conditioning was outstanding and he could also go with both hands, and had a good chin. Not many weaknesses, but some guys say he didnt hit hard.

Serge....
A buddy of mine was a pro player and his first pro fight was against Serge, he told me "This fukking nutty looking frenchmen came after me, he had no teeth and looked like a frigging serial killer, I was so scared but it made me fight better, I survived".

I'd need to see more of Serge to be fair. I always loved what I saw from Mario though.
Both guys had taken boxing backgrounds I do believe which served them well. Serge may have been called up had the Habs not had Ewen at basically the same time I figure. |

Serge. He was a legit HW tough guy. Mario was smaller and a better player so he spent actual time in the NHL. But Serge was one of the feared minor league guys back in the day.

I have a bit of Serge..and as far as fighting skills, i'd have to go with Serge, BUT i am also a huge fan of Mario so it's tough. I loved that Canadiens team when they used Ewen, Mario and Odie. I was happy to see them win a cup (as Ewen was m yfirst fave player and Mario was one of my fave fighters as well at the time). Then Ewen became a "mighty" duck ..much to my dismay. Anyways, i loved how the canadiens-sabres rivalry was guaranteed fights back then... ray, may, donnelly, ewen, roberge, odie etc

Serge
Well, 4 years later here is my point of view.
I am probably younger that all of you, and I knew those guys frome de LNAH and former spelling of that very league. I live north Quebec City where Serge played for several seasons. He was almost 40 when he was here. Both Roberge were smart as their career last longer than open fighter. They both use about the same technique but with a different approach. Mario would explode when he see a breech into an opponent defence. Serge would go along with slow but very precise heymaker. Serge did not do well in NHL because of poor hockey sense. Mario had a better one at leat. Serge was one of the better enforcer to force someone into a fight withtout putting is team into trouble. And he was always there for a teammate. I miss that kind of guy. It took several season to have a better enforcer thant him around here but now we count on Martin Grenier. I do believe he could inspire himself with the Roberge technique besoin he his a very smart fighter with a lot of reach and weight. I do my best to write an understandable English, but as you may know we speak French by a large margin north Quebec City. |
