Lets give it up for the hammer

I think i can make a very good case for dave the hammer schultz as the all time most underatted fighter in hockey here are some bullet points

1 endurance... nobody in the 70's had schultz endurance he kept going even when grabed by two linesman

2 chin of stone..how many times koed or kded i count never but a few slips haters like to call kd's

3 never slaughter in fight...of coarse had loses but was he slaughter by robinson or gillies NO

4 longevity..like beat johnthon and ben wilson when he was over the hill playing for kings and peiguines

5 heart..yes he is a whinny apologists for fighting now but when played nobody brought as much excitement as schultzj

6-beat dan maloney..as i mentioned it another thread i saw that famous fight live on ktla chanel 5 los angeles and my beloved dangerous dan lost to schultz in philliy dave had taken a run at don kozak along right wing boards in kings end dan ran from behind drop gloves landed a sucker shot before schultz squared up i was all excited danny boy would finish him off but when he moved inside dave nutralized dans right got off two strong jabs of his own rocked dan for a narrow but clean win

Amen brother! Maloney got cut in the fight as I've seen a newspaper photo of him after the fight with blood running down his face.

coming off his exploits and record run of destruction as a king i was one suprised kid watching dan lose that on tv i recall that same year as maybe the only HOCKEY NEWS reader in los angeles yet another bit about best fighters and dan maloney was right on top they also mentioned that schultz was most 'active fighter' not the best. needliest to say i had by biggest head rush since that bong hit from the night before when the fight started even thou schultz had run kozak from behind (this was the 70's) he was not expecting dan to start throwing before he got his gloves of well he caught a good long right and dan who was bulling him into the boards for the kill till dave tied him up and got in the jabs that won the fights the johnthan fight a few years latter i think was a year or so after stans wipe out of bouchard and was also in playoff game and was the best one on one playoff fight i ever saw including clark vs mc sorlley ..ben wilson fight might of been most amazing of all as schultz was at the end of the line ben was young and fearless from somewhere dave found his oldself and pulled out the win in a slug fest those wins alone will forever make dave schultz a all time legend

Let's not get carried away here, Schultz was still going strong late in his career but the Wilson fight may have been a draw or narrow win for Schultz. It's hard to call a clear cut winner because the camera angles weren't the best. I do agree that he is a little underrated fight wise, also the guy could flat out play hockey having registered a 20 goal season with back to back hat tricks.

I've said it many times here, but I'll say it again: Dave Schultz was the best agitator I've ever seen.

its a very wide descripution hockey agitators but if the discription would be something like caused chaos every time on the ice i would agree with you on schultz and would add these players i have seen for best of each decade

50's dicky duff...ok i was 4 years old end of that decade but i rember him being nothing but trouble in rare telavised games i would see

60's eddie shack..his brief time with kings somebody was always trying to kill him..then when traded dan maloney tried to kill him

70's schultzy

80's tiger williams..captain chaos for sure

90's claude emieux..dirty but a winner

00- avery..maybe most annoying since annoying been a word

10 gravey butaplenty ..future resident of hockey hell

I did not realize he was an underrated fighter? I would never put him in that category. He was a beast!

i like dave schultz but he was not the unbeatable beast that some people talk about. i remember him getting smoked by pierre bouchard of all guys... twice in the same season. i remember schultz getting absolutely destroy by a very young larry robinson.

Peter Worrell would murder Schultz on a regular basis if they played against one another.

habs fan i have always heard that bouchard and schultz split the 2 fights and after the 2nd one a Montreal boxing promoter wanted to put them in the ring to break the tie . as for robinson i saw live and on tape of coarse and i always thougt dave had hurt his hand after knocking out john vanboxmier with one punch earlier in the period !

Wish there was more footage readily available. The clips I have seen are actually very impressive against good competition. Those were some beauties with O'Reily.
