John Wensink vs Nick Fotiu

So I came across this cool photo online:

After doing some research however, I can't seem to find any evidence of these two ever actually fighting. Does anybody know what this picture is from and what exactly happened here?

I believe they squared off, but never fought. I've got to admit...I think Nicky would have taken this one. He was very strong and I see him getting Wensink's right locked out similar to what Nystrom did to him. Fotiu may have been the best (non-hugging) defensive fighter ever. Locked out Behn Wilson pretty good and not many can say that.

Happened on Valentines Day 1979, they dropped the gloves, squared off and circled each other forever... Neither guy would engage and they ended up getting delay of game penalties. Great picture but no fight to go with the picture.

That's disappointing. Fotiu most likely would have won, but it had the chance to be a classic if it ever did go down because Wensink was relentless.

I was there-it was February 14 of 1979 and Don Maloney's first game as a Ranger. The Rangers held the Bruins without a shot in the first period and won 5-1!
They danced and never fought!
Why do I remember so much?
It was also the day that George Young was hired from the Miami Dolphins to save the Giants as their new GM. He would shock the fans a few months later by making a bold move in drafting Phil Simms from tiny Morehead State after hiring Ray Perkins as the Head Coach! All the experts had him drafting Jack Thompson, the Throwin Samoan!
This day is embedded in my brain!
Don Maloney was a breath of fresh air for Phil Esposito, who finally had a corner man like he had in Boston in Wayne Cashman and the 37 year old Esposito went on to score 42 goals and then in the playoffs scored 8 goals and 20 points in 18 games!
Valentines's Day of 1979!

Another Fotiu non fight. the guy's career is littered with them. So many "almost" fights.

Not sure who would win the fight had they gone- Wensink was incredibly strong and a nut case, to boot. I remember wensink with that manson-like smile he flashed at Nicky during this square off. He also claims a big win over Behn Wilson with no rematch to avenge it in return. Go figure. John must have been in his head haha.

Given the fact that Fotiu had issues coming to grips with numerous opponents and wensink did not, I would say Fotiu was the hesitant one. trying to wait out wensink and goad him into committing first. Classic fotiu-but this led to a lot of nothing incidents and square offs that resulted in nada. Can anyone say Pat Ribble??

Think these 2 r famous friends, not sure how far that goes back. Nicky lived on Cape Cod and married a local gal up there. Don't see Wensink taking this, nevertheless, repsect you sticking up for your Bruin who was a tough and wild as the wind.

Can't resist can you? Your obsession is unhealthy.

Wensink is overrated. If he was a Canuck or King, nobody would have ever cared.

I'd put my money on Nick in this matchup. He was never aggressive but only fools rush in and Nick perfected that. Great defensive fighter.

Too bad it never happened. Wensink was "scared".

I talked to Nick at a local card show a few years ago and kind of did a "unoffical" interview with him. I asked him about certain fights and why he didn't fight certain players. When I mentioned Wensink he told me that they had the same agent. The agent suggested to him that they shouldn't fight each other.

Wensink looked like Ronald McDonald. The guy was a straight up clown and in today's game he'd get slaughtered like a hog. He would have been tourtured mercilessly by players like Brashear, Worrell, Laraque and McCarthy

In this one--had they actually fought--Fotiu would have grabbed two big handfuls of his clown-like hair and headbutted him to the ice. Dead! Then Nicky would have skated by the Boston bench asking: "ya want some!?"

And screw Wayne Cashman, too!
