Shmyr played quite a few years in the WHA and was well into his 30s by the time he went back to the NHL. The WHA became a real fighting league from 74-75 on. I'd be willing to bet a dollar that the fight per game average was a good bit higher than the NHL's during those years. I don't think anybody went undefeated.

I agree to many fights and fighters to go unbeaten.

I'm sure there were alot of "muggings" considering the number of bench clearers that occured and the shear number of fights. There seems to be alot written on the Carlson/Fotiu fight. Many comments coming that Carlson had bloodied him and suckered him as well. According to many, he was considered the toughest dude in the WHA.

In the first couple years of the WHA, Gord Gallant was the consensus choice as best fighter/toughest guy. Gallant wasn't a real big guy though and that obviously changed as teams started loading up on bigger tough guys 74-75ish. Fotiu and Carlson were part of that but by no means the only two. I don't think too many guys could have handled Bryan Maxwell.

Speaking of Bryan Maxwell, I hear there is video of him getting brutally KO'd by Semenko in the NHL...anyone have that?

Also a good little writeup on Gordie Gallant:

, I wanna say he later played in the IHL in the late 70's for Toledo but I could be wrong...thought I remember him in a unbelievable punch out with Archie Henderson.

The vids I've seen of Maxwell are all NHL stuff and he does fine for himself. Let's face it, the NHL had better tough guys, they just, with some exceptions, didn't fight as much. He was pretty dominant when he first came up in the WHA. I saw that myself and he was a big guy for his early days anyway.

The Gallant-McNamee fight was an eyebrow raiser at the time. The bigger fighters had arrived and Gord was kind of supplanted as top dog.

Was a very good fighter through his transfer to the NHL. I saw him fight Terry O'Reilly live when he fell back over his own leg. He screwed up his knee badly. It was not pretty. They had to take him off the ice on a stretcher.

Gallant even had a win over the very tough Dave Hutchison in the WHA. Some day when I have the time I'll post that story.

Here's some photos of the Gallant-McNamee fights. They fought twice during this bench clearing brawl. McNamee won both fights and bloodied Gallant.

Here's some video of Gordie Gallant in the famous Calgary-Quebec brawl. Nice knees! The WHA was pretty violent to say the least. It all started with Rick Jodzio skating full blast and cross checking Marc Tardiff in the head.
