irate Gillies vs. prime Kocur

Okay! Its coming to the end of th summer and hockey is near. Time for some more mental gymnastics to warm up for the season...

How do we see this one boys?

I will take Gillies when he is in that "zone" anyday.......Not withstanding Kocur and his ability to deliver a sometimes big punch

Interesting matchup Bing...IMO Clark was too smart of a fighter to get hit with too many of Joey's rights, and being that's pretty much all that Joey brings to the table....I'd give Clark the "W"

Hey Jethro 9 - You know I must say you hit the nail on the head - I agree with you that Gillies was indeed a very smart fighter - And he was at his "smartest" when he was blazing mad - I don't believe I ever saw him lose when he was Pi**ed....If anyone had the where withall to give Kocur a bit of his own medicine it was 09....I could see even Kocur with a busted mug ala Hospodar...

In all honesty, if Fotiu was in the zone as you term it or really focused to fight and angry I'd probably take him over anybody. The problem was getting Nick focused and fired up to fight.

I totally agree with you BJ. The difference being (in my humble opinion) Nicky was always on the edge and you could just see the adrenalin, I mean look at this face and eyes when he is squaring up - That boy was intense in all his fights - But, here is the rub BJ. Nicky threw from angles and save the TKO on Wilson he wasn't very lethal with his punches - Gillies on the other hand had that proverbial "piston like jackhammer coming straight down Main Street" He threw em hard and straight and on a continum - Too much for most

They each neutralize each others' right arms and have a standoff . . . DRAW or NO CONTEST . . .

Just to go against the usual 70's worshiping - Kocur knocks him on his @ss 6 out of 10.

I know we are all busy but I was hoping for one of your dissertations disecting this matchup.

I have to go with Gillies. I don't know why but Kocur was just the more beatable of the two. Gillies was big enough to control Kocur's right which made a draw the best possible outcome for Kocur. That leaves Gillies with all the upside in this matchup.

Gillies would smack him down easier than Richter did if he was pissed off.

Very interesting matchup indeed. If the title of the thread would hold true in this matchup, then we should see both fighters opening up and going toe to toe. I'd go with ESTB in that this fight would probably be a draw 9 times out of 10. There are some things to look out for though...

Both guys would land some solid punches. Both guys have been knocked down before, Gillies probably has the better chin compared to Kocur. It would seem that Kocur was more beatable, but we have to remember that Kocur has 4x as many career fights as Gillies has. (246-63)

Gillies also struggled a little with the smaller fighters; O'Reilly, Schultz, Byers. In the end, it would certainly be a very entertaining series between these two. I believe most of the fights would be draws with good punches by both. An occasional solid win and maybe even a KD win for each would probably occur along the way.

Gillies no doubt!

Gillies would be a little too much for Kocur. Gillies was a monster. A giant monster

Did Gillies ever fight Nilan? if so any details?

Thanks

If Gillies was pissed, I think he could take Kocur. If not, I'd say draw or edge Kocur.

I don't usually dissect these hypothetical, head-to-head match-ups (try to reserve those dissertations for an analysis of all-time rank which is, in large part, irrelevant to this type of an analysis) . . .

I think this would have been a fairly even match-up . . . Kocur has held his own with guys bigger (Grimson, Kyte) and (presumably) stronger (Brashear, Twist) than Gillies, and has handled himself well against individuals with similar KO pop (Grimson, Twist, Fraser) . . . he's also held his own with Bob Probert, whom many (including myself) consider to be better than even the "enraged" Gillies . . . to say an "enraged" Gillies would mop the floor with a prime Kocur (who always fought with bad intentions) is ludicrous IMO; to say he could've beaten Kocur is fine, just as its logical to think that Kocur could've beaten Gillies (remember, just like Kocur, Gillies took his lumps here and there, and who the hell are we to know that he wasn't completely enraged or motivated during some of the fights he lost) . . .

There is a reason these two are currently numbers 4 (Kocur) and 5 (Gillies) in the hockeyfights.com all-time poll, and it isn't because they both got beaten down routinely by ANYBODY (no matter how enraged that person happened to be) . . .

I dont think any fighter in history can match the ferocity of the enraged Clark Gillies, not Probie not anyone, the guy didnt fight enough and I hated that but his flurry of rights against the shorter more patient Kocur, would catch Joey before ho got off a shot and pound him to the ice.I'm talking the Gillies who showed up against Hospodar, Johnathon, Secord, etc, not the Gillies who was pounded by Wilson or Byers.

Richter unloaded on Kocur and Joey didnt know WTF hit him! I can see Gillies doing the same thing.

Kocur has more losses than most give him credit for, Gary Nylund dropped him with a right in Toronto in 85-86 but no one talks about that much.
