now Chris Therien...theres a big guy who fighting was not even a thought in his mind...

Also, what i take away from this video the most is the goalie equipment...he looks like a right winger playing net.
This is a great point. I'm not deducting pts from Otto at all for his performances. Its just a little odd that a guy that big playing hard nosed the way he did wasn't as animated as he could have been.

Brian Boyle is more useless than Otto. But reality is anyone with size should use it.

He did, he just did fight as often as full time heavies.

Pavel Kubina is 6'4 250 and almost never fights. he's such a nice guy and I think he is afraid to hurt someone by hitting them, I wouldn't ever want to get him really mad so I've resisted all urges to sleep with his wife.

Cory Cross was another ex Lightning player that was very tall but was a gigantic vagina.

Hal Gill is another legendary huge guy who can't or won't fight.

However, with that being said, I wouldn't lump Joel Otto in with any of those guys, Otto fought fairly regularly and was a pretty decent player, penalty killer, faceoff man, it wasn't his job to fight and don't think he was expected to.

He got away with murder as a player like the elbow on Ric Nattress, just one of many transgressions by this so called "leader". I always hated Messier and liked Otto, at least Otto wasn't dirty.

Otto was the definition of gritty, not a superior fighter by any stretch but certainly had guts.
"So called leader"? What is wrong with you Mike? Messier did fight and he is second all time in points for the NHL. He was a great player and a great leader though I am sorry he was just too dirty for you. I was laughing last week at all the dumb comments on a Messier video I posted on Youtube but I figured that was just kids that didn't know any better. Maybe not.

And again you put false spin on a video. Watch it again. At the 10 second mark look behind Beukaboom. You will see Otto skate up to Messier who was minding his own business and drop his gloves. They did have a fair beginning in a fight that was instigated by Otto. He wanted it, he got it. And for some reason you have to cry about Messier for fighting back. Maybe he should have given Otto a hug after knocking him down in a fight Otto started just to make you happy.

Well knock me down and call me Susan!!

I was referring to his "fighting ability" or lack thereof, that was whay I figured this thread was about, not his playing ability. He was a good player but for his size he should have been dominant in his era.....and he wasnt and I saw him play in the 80's when he was usually the biggest player on the ice......

Did you see him get pummelled by Semenko?? it was embarrassing to say the least....Gill put his nose into his forehead at a 50lb weigh disadvantage, he seemed like a Teddy Bear on skates, Willie Huber at Center, how he hung in there with Wilson baffles me....

He was a top forward on some really good teams. He would shut down the teams top center, score around 20 goals and have 150 PIMS. Not bad for a guys who was also a top face off guy. Plus he was from Minnesota, what's not to love. There is no one like that today in the crapy new NHL. We should all recall Joel Otto with respect and be thankful that dudes that him were in the NHL.
