I have talked to ex tough guys and they always take the high road when talking about teammates or ex rivals. First and foremost they are a brotherhood of lion kings and we're just squirrels trying to find a nut.
You're absolutely correct, the Fotiu in Calgary was an old Fotiu, past his prime as a fighter. I think the Fotiu we saw in Calgary was living off his well earned reputation.

What would be really interesting to hear is just what Glen Sather was saying to Fotiu from the bench during that brawl in the playoffs. Vividly remember Fotiu almost hysterical with an anguished expression - it almost looked like he was crying - screaming at Sather who obviously said something that really got under Nick's skin. He actually seemed to try to get at Sather.

Fotiu was with the Flyers for that game, Paterson was the Ranger, and I think that was very near the end for him. It might just be a case of him taking Paterson a little lightly too. I was very surprised by the outcome. There's no denying Fotiu was top of the charts at his peak. The tapes don't lie.

Fotiu doesnt fight so often.
I dont underrates or overrates Fotiu, hes real rank is somewhere 13-16 of all the time.
Pretty classic tough guy who could to play the game.
Fotiu could play the game, in the era of pre Europeans. Add 6 Euros per team & Fotiu is riding the busses in the ECHL.

Well, this is why God invented youtube . . . .

YouTube - Nick Fotiu vs Joe Paterson -...

I had forgotten about the hair pulling, so you could argue it's a win for Fotiu on a disqualification.

It was a win for Paterson, but it's not wildly one sided by any stretch. Fotiu would be a 3rd liner in today's game . . . and he'd have to wear a helmet.

It's funny when you listen to the Flyers clip and Bobby Taylor who basically has the fight a draw and Sam Rosen on the Rangers feed who say's Nick's gonna have a headache from all the rabbit punches!

Gene Hart and Bobby Taylor were great here! Rule book Gene was right but Paterson wasn't tossed like he should of been!

I can't imagine anyone topping The Chief as my all time favorite personal meeting with an athlete. He let me try on his Stanley Cup ring. Hard to top that!

Losing to Joe Paterson wasnt uncommon, he rarely lost and had some impressive wins over tough guys, now there's an underrated hockey fighter!.

Paterson was drafted as a Flyer, but was traded to DET in the Murray Craven deal right before I moved to the area. I remember that game was a weekend matinee and for whatever reason, Flyers afternoon games in those days were often fight fests.

When I talked to Nick a few years ago he admitted that he didn't look good against Patterson. He said it was at the end of his shift and he was tired and wished he hadn't fought him at that time.

Just the opposite. The Wings drafted him and dealt him to Philly!
