Hutch vs tiger playoff brawl spills over to new season

Maybe my greatest heartbreak as a hockey fan was the great 70's king team under bob pullford that got bounced in round one . This team had over 100 points in the regular season and looked ready for a long and strong playoff run. the team had a little bit of everything with the hot line of whitey whiting bob berry tommy williams the speedy gene carr and ageless wonder terry harper on D the unquestioned leader was ofcoarse dangerous dan maloney and riding shot gun former nhl tough guy dave hutchison The nhl back then had the stupidest playoff format in history with a straight 1-16 ect playoff setup with no geographic boundaries and a 2 out of 3 elimination first round.I recall vividly how afraid i was to face a original 6 team no matter how bad they were just because they were always so dominate in the early days after expansion so of coarse with our high seeding we draw the maple leafs ! We won our first at home flew all the way to toronto to lose in ot then all the way back to los angeles for game 3 which might of been played the next night or night after at the latest ..what a great king team that was but the leafs playing a grinding smart game got up 2-0 tiger williams came out for a shift as a loose puck went behind the king goal roogie vacoun went behind to play it and tiger williams did not miss the chance to give him a bumb from behind chasing the puck . without maloney or hutch on the ice it was the blonde bomer gene carr jumping williams from behind and actually getting in a few shots before everybody piled in ..he and tiger were off to the penalty box to serve there time and after the gloves and sticks were picked up during the stoppage hutchison came off the bench skated over to the leaf penalty box said something to a smirking tiger who stood up stick in hand and they were off ..no contact was made but they were swinging to kill .needless to say they were tossed from game kings got a goal to make it 2 to 1 but that was the game and the king season came to a end great regular season gone The next season i saw what i thought was the first ANTICIPATED hockey fight i could remember ..in the first hutch skated by the leaf bench and tiger flew off the bench after dave skated buy and did a straight jump job landing some good ones ..needless to say dave was not a happy camper and as soon as the penalty expired he charged right out of the penalty box and returned the favor ..tiger saw him coming and i saw my first turtlle .that king season was a bomb by the way but at least one fawn memory

Somebody gave me the same advice and i'll pass it along. Welcome to remember when.

Yes, the '75 playoffs. Actually 12 teams ( out of 18 ) made the playoffs back then. It was a bit of a flawed system. All four divisional winners were given a 1st round bye. All 2cd and 3rd place teams made the playoffs. The Atlanta Flames were 5 points better than the Leafs that year, but because they finished 4th in the Patrick division, they did not qualify for the post season.

Los Angeles finished well ahead of Vancouver that year, but the Canucks finished 1st in the shabby Smythe division, so they got the bye, the Kings were forced to play, they finished 2cd in their division behind the Habs. So we actually had the 4th place team facing the 13th place team. We up here didn't think the Leafs could pull it off. The Kings blasted the Leafs 8-0 in a regular season game that year, and we expected more of the same come playoff time.

I didn't see any of game 1 ( 11 pm start Toronto time ). L.A. won 3-2 in ot. Leafs take second game 3-2 in ot again, with Blaine Stoughton playing hero. Game 3 was a Friday night, so I was able to watch the first period. If I am remembering correctly, the Leafs led 1-0 after the first. I think Inge Hammarstrom scored both goals for the Leafs that night. The thing I remember about game 3 was two players were sent off after 4 seconds for I think slashing ( it's really strange some of the things you remember ). I was quite shocked the next morning when I found out the boys in blue took out the Kings.

Hey, King of Culver, if it's any consolation, the Leafs were swept by Philly in the next round. Game four went to ot and Moose Dupont put the Leafs out of their misery, set up by none other than Dave the hammer.

The NHL did change the rules about 4th place finishers not qualifying for the playoffs after the Rangers suffered the same fate as the Flames.

Hey, king of culver, which choke job hurt more, losing to the Leafs in '75, or the Rangers in '81.
