Bill Huard might be the only guy who has wins over all 3 fighters in Tony Twist, Dave Brown and Joey Kocur. I remember a former poster on here named Juha giving Huard a lot of praise.

Here's what Brown said about Huard.
Quote:
"Billy Huard hit me the hardest during night game in Ottawa. (Sept 27, 1994) It was a preseason game, and our team was real lethargic, including me! I pushed him into a fight and he hit me with a left, cutting me for about 8 stitches. He hit me hard. I was dazed, but I stayed on my feet. During the rest of that fight, I just tied him up. After that, I had to go after him again. He wasn't pushing it. It was my fault. I should have just let it go. I liked and respected Bill Huard."

Nice that he decks all the big punchers - what does that say about him?

My guess is that Huard was probably one of those guys who gets "up" to fight the heavy punching guys. I've seen it both playing and coaching, the fear of getting hurt or hit, turns them into wrecking machines. Look at his card - he'll beat a monster puncher in Ray and than lost to Turner Stevenson who wasn't that great. Beat Dave Brown than had an uninspired draw with Jeff Beukeboom. Had a great fight with Sandy McCarthy than two nothing scraps with Randy McKay and Nick Kypreos.

Guys like that are tough to fight, because you never know what they'll do...

Huard was a power puncher but he would lose balance throwing some of those bombs. So he could be inconsistant. I remember even in the AHL with Utica, he nearly beheaded Bruce Shoebottom but then was smoked, in turn, by Jim Mckenzie.

Eric Godard is the same way IMO. He draws or edges guys that he SHOULD destroy, but then he has no problem dropping guys like Boogaard, MacIntyre, Orr ect...

Well B*Os post sort of confirmes what Boobs writes in his post about Huard being sort of on again-off again with dropping Twist and handling Kocur and Brown...and then being more or less ragdolled by Domi.
Your post proves that Simon, a top-10 all-time in my opinion, beat Domi soundly 5 times.

Huard beating those guys raised quite a few eyebrows....Simon beating Domi..not so much.

Srehm I get what you mean but this isn't the best example....there's no shame in losing to a fast throwing monster like McKenzie, and as far as beating Shoebottom goes, big whoop. Haven't you seen any of his NHL scraps? The guy was criminally overrated.

Rampage: Maybe it was fear, or maybe it was fighting to the level of your opponent because that's probably more accurate. Huard was certainly a different fighter against upper echelon competition than he was against lesser guys and his record reflects that...

Yeah, but he got SMOKED by McKenzie. he didn't just 'lose'.

Shoebottom was a good AHL HW for a number of years and a guy you could help build a reputation by beating. Huard didn't just beat him, he flattened him. I think this shows how inconsistant he could be.

BTW, who is 'criminally' overrating Shoe? I barely ever hear him mentioned on this board.

Okay, there's no shame in getting beaten badly by Jim McKenzie either. Come on....he was in your top 25 too.

Shoebottom isn't necessarily overrated on this board but he seems to be considered a legend among fight fans for whatever reason. We're talking about a guy who lost several times to Mike Hartman and Kevin Maguire and could barely even beat Trevor Steinberg. Also, he suffers from McSorley syndrome (meaning that even though he's considered strong, he's almost always getting physically dominated by everyone else)

Shoebottom was good, not great. I did a breakdown of his career over at fightclub. I'll see if I can dig it up. He was a good AHL/minor league HW. Not great or elite but he was solid. He gave Probert a good go in juniors. I do think he was strong and he did like to grapple and he would wind up to throw punches and put himself off balance. How many of his AHL fights have you seen? Shoe took on a number of those big name NHL HW's we would be cheering for in the late 80's early 90's.

As far as 'McSorley syndrome' is concerned-bench you see McSorley lose a series of fights to Brash and automatically think he was physically dominated by everyone else?? that's absolutely untrue. McSorley was usually the one physically dominating everyone until he was in his like 14th year and got owned by a fighter who just happend to be stronger than him! Also a lot of that tugging and pulling that brash did looked like it was learned from watching Mcsorley's fights. Immitation is the sincerest form of flattery! hey Brash is top10 or top-5 all time. no shame in anyone losing to him. McSorley or McCarthy included. Nothing wrong with a great fighter losing to a great fighter.

Agree that Huard was up and down - glad he got up for the big names - I like the analogy to Godard who is an absolute giant killer - yet he could struggle with lesser names.
