Jim Mcenzie always impressed me and if I did ever make a top 25 he'd sneak in higher than most others would put him and of course Darroll Powe cracks my top 10

Of the other guys mentioned; i also put glen cochrane into strong consideration. He's moved around but always is in my top 30 mix. Very few losses etc.
Jim Mckenzie, to me, is an automatic but i know he gets overlooked a bit. Total lock in my top 20. I've considered him as high as in the mix for #10. The overshadowed recent guys like cairns and worrell, even johnson certainly merit a look. All three had very few losses (especially big pete) when they matured and were in the mix for the top slot right before the lockout. Mcgrattan probably fits in as well. Guys i would have to spend a day watching their careers on the video sites to evaluate for sure. I guess if short term forces like jonathan, cochrane, J. kordic and miller are in the conversation, any other guys are eligeble as well.

I'm going to stick my neck out here, and he would be in the lower echelons of my top-25, but I'm going to say Lyle Odelein. Why, you ask:
Played as the Habs' primary enforcer for a number of years in the early-mid 1990s, when the 'golden age' of NHL fighting was truly at it's peak Longevity - played (and fought) in the league for 18 seasons Very strong card - took all comers in a very tough era Very seldom beaten bad/TKOd - especially in his prime with MTL, NJ Consistently active Entertainment value - could be a loose cannon at times

Some of the names I've seen so far leave me shaking my head..... but that's why I started this thread! To see who had some unusual names listed in their all-time top-25 lists. It's all subjective and this isn't the thread for it, but I got a bone to pick with some of you guys hahaha.
Jeff chychrun? DAryl Stanley? Mark Janssens? Odelein? WOW. Keep'em coming boys!

Robs...
I was always a huge Gary Roberts fan... Even though he played for the Leafs, I think he is one tough SOB that never ever got the props he deserved for going the Mcsorley's and Baumgartner's, etc... Robs gets my vote!

Well you asked for more srehm and you got it. Gary Roberts? There is no 1 in front of the 25 people. This is one thread where I wish juha was here just so I could really see some ridiculous names thrown out there. "I have Scott Mellanby ranked 141st but I often think I should move him up." I mean, some of these guys would have trouble cracking this year's top 10, which happens to be the worst ever.
Some of the names I like were Tocchet, Cochrane, and Wells. I would have thought Clark would be there already, same as Tocchet. I have been wondering where you guys have Berube ranked. If I get a list going he will be very high. If he isn't in the top 10 area then there is too much emphasis on stats.

It's difficult to actually rank these guys. It's easy to see a guys name and make a call on his ranking, but when you sit down and try to make a top-25 list you often find yourself overwhelmed by all the candidates for so few spots. can I place berube ahead of Grimson? McSorley? Simon? McCarthy? McKenzie? Brash? laraque? Domi? i don't know if I can. it's such a daunting task at times.

I've never been big on all-time lists;ive seen most of the greats,a few like Playfair and Wilson i haven't seen alot of fights from. Not sure where Jay Miller is ranked all-time,but he was one of my favorites. Sanderson coined the term "take a few to give a few" because of Jay.I only remember a few times Jay got dusted, most of the times he handled himself well against the best;Probert,Brown, etc. Certainly not the hardest puncher by any means, but he had a iron chin, could take a punch. I'll never forget him welcoming Chief Berube into the league;having Sanderson bellow that Jay wanted no part of that exchange,he just wanted to play hockey! Classic sh*t right there.

I was just having some fun. No disrespect to you or Roberts. I will prove that by leaving that 75% comment alone.

We had a good thread on berube all time status in the last year. He's in my 15-18 range. I was suprised some had him much lower but it was one of the better threads recently.

Clark had his way with alot of the guys I see mentioned here, I have him at #10.
I believe I had Barry Beck and possibly Willi Plett...definitely John Kordic. Hated how Beck fought (most of the time) but never saw anyone beat the guy. Curt Fraser gets in there too. Gary Roberts?? McGill??? interesting names....

Bryan Marchment - just a pure thug and had an awesome nasty streak.
Jim Cummins - Tons of energy and was so underrated, fearless and could take a solid punch, I always looked forward to seeing him in the lineup no matter who he played for. He's actually in my top 5 favorites to watch. Cam Russell - Only because he could take a beating and keep coming back for more. I have to give props to someone that was so willing yet so horrible at fighting. |
