The Fight of their Career!

Most of the time we talk about the All-Time best fighters when we debate their merrits and rankings on the HF "Remember When" section.

But what about the "other" guys, the willing ones who were not as polished with their fists? Yes these guys were ready to drop the gloves just as much but the results were almost always not positive.

But as the old saying goes, "Every dog has his day" and so did these guys. What fighter and what fight do you think was the best fight of their mediocre fighting career?

I start things off with three guys with alot of guts but not a lot of wins to show for it, but in these fights, they were "King for a Day".

1) Chris Tamer KD of Bob Probert with a left hand.

2) Kelly Buchberger goes toe to toe with Jay Miller and pulls out the win.

3) Mathew Barnaby KD of Joe Dziedzic.

Gentleman, let's hear some of your top choices!!!

Great thread Spider' :

Raglan - Kocur
McKay- Brown
Morisette/Ewen - Probert

those are obvious "lucky punches"

but I think the idea of the thread is not just one great /lucky punch..but a fight where the underdog fights beyond his normal capabilities. For me these examples are:

McKay- D.Brown ..not just a lucky punch but a terrific showing in their first encounter

Perrault- D.Maloney - although I didn't see it ...it was the epitome of this thread. Originally called a huge win for Gil, but many say it was close...regardless it was a war and the young Perrault...not a fighter shocked the hockey world.

D. Gare- Gillies- the little guy may've got the edge on Jethro.

Lysiak- Korn - long in the tooth ,mild mannered Lysiak takes it to the big bully Korn in MLG and takes the win

Yeah, I know lucky punch -but another grizzled veteran Darryl Sittler drops Ken Houston (LA) behind the net in PHI . That was shocking...

How about Mike Milbury going t2t with Tim Kerr - Milbury usually a laughing stock looks unrecognizable and is throwing and NOT falling down..I had to look at the jersey to make sure.

B.MacClelland - Playfair ... OK , one lucky punch..but two !!! No way. Another shocker by the mild Mac...cleaned up the ice with Playfair..it was shocking ...made me think the mafia was involved and told LP to take a dive...wow !!

BS25 - I am dating myself here but I remember the Atlanta Flames with Plett, Houston, etc...I was just a kid but occasionally I would catch them on NBC Saturday game........We did not se Atlanta that much in NYC television wise. I distinctly remember "big Ken Houston" he was a giant to me with that big black mustache - Remember that he had some rep anyway back then. So, fast forward to this afternoon I research KH and find less than nothing, other than the fact that Sittler TKO'd him.......Is there a back-story to Houston that I am missing?

Houston had a huge rep..didn't fight that much but was known to handle himself well. Broke Schultz 's jaw (albeit slightly tainted ..can't remember might 've been a sucker..or something like that), anyways he tko'd Howatt one of the few that ever did that.

B25 you have the spirit of this thread!

Some great calls already and so many more waiting to be made!

How about Hal Gill fighting a toe to toe battle with Eric Godard. Gill may have won on points which is incredible to think about.

How about Doug Smolek decisioning Marty McSorley

How about Greg Adams decisioning Chris Nilan.

How about Jason Doig over Tie Domi.

How about Larry Melnyk going toe to toe with Dave Brown.

Jeff Parker Beating Darin Kimble. It was a revenge fight from a few days earlier when Kimble laid someone on Buffalo out at center ice.

J. Potvin landing some solid lefts on Oreilly. It was a good fight with Oreilly landing a few early then surprise Potvin unloads a few smashing lefts. I remember Oreilly was cut pretty good. [the video doesn't show that].

Park vs Playfair -- I remember waiting for Playfair to unload but Park was landing some along the boards and Playfair never got loose. A weird fight but definitley a surprise.

Nolet vs Ferguson- Still thing Fergy had the edge but quite a surprise to see Nolet open his eye with a couple of solid shots. Nolet got a lot of milage out of this fight. People talked about it for years. Talk about King for a Day.

The Jean Potvin fight was a surprise as he landed some decent shots on O'Reilly. The Fergy fight was a shocker. It was still a close fight but Nolet giving him all he could handle was more than I expected. As I recall, this was when Fergy was in his hayday!

Kimble was a big time tough guy at the time and Parker took him on and got his team going with a big win! Kimble was looking for it and he got it! Parker was a rugged, good sized guy but not in Kimble's league. Good Call!

It actually was when Fergy was called the top gun for sure. Here are some pics of the bout. I would love to see that one again. Over the years you definitly can't recall the complete fight. When I saw the Cashman - Picard fight from the 70 finals last week I was surprised by it. I of course saw it back then and knew Cash won but it was still nice to see the whole fight.
