Denis Savard

Ok...you are probably wondering why I am starting a thread on Denis Savard. It is more of a question than anything. I was watching that brawl between Chic and Toront where Savard and Leeman had that fun little donnybrook. I remember watching that live and swiching channels because the Rangers were playing a tuff team and I did not want to miss any scraps in that game. In fact my video at home still has those channel switching during 1 part of the mini-brawl. Anyway.....I was looking at Savard's stats and noticed that he had 1338 points and 1336 PIM. He had a couple of 100+ pim seasons. Maybe I am having a brain fart, but I do not remember Savard getting into many scraps. Can anyone shed some light on this for me? I know players like Fleury accumalate massive PIM w/out fighting, but I don't remember Savard being that fiesty/chippy. Maybe I am wrong. Give me some insight!

I remember him like Roenick or Clarke or Linseman- cheapshot artists. Not especially tough but a spotpicker to be cheap and a hit and run guy!

I remember seeing a sports highlight clip (spring, 1983) where Dino used Denis for a punching bag.

Savard actually had two fights I can remember where he did ok. Let's say he got at least a draw. Both these fights were against smaller non fighter types like himself, but I can't remember the opponents. I do recall him throwing some lefts in one fight.

Generally, he was not a fighter. He was on a line with Al Secord, and that was a perfect match. Al protected Savard, and Denis set up Secord for numerous goals. The third member of that line was the quiet very underrated Steve Larmer.

One funny story about Savard that many may not know. In his rookie year he brought the terrible habit of kissing teammates on the lips when they got on the bench after a goal. I actually have one of these on tape, and its really strange! Larmer pulled away after the smooch and gave Savard a real dirty look. The press asked him about this. He said he wasn't gay or anything but it was something some of his teammates did in the minors. He laughed and said he would not do it again.

That long dance he and Leeman did during that game in the Gardens was really hilarious!
It could have been an interesting fight if stupid Manson didn't interfere.

Savard got into a funny fight with Jari Kurri one year, both guys sort of flailing away like schoolgirls and not hitting each other. I think it was in the playoffs in 90'.

If Manson hadn't interfered it would have been a bad night for Savard. Gary Leeman was a very underrated fighter and would have cleaned up with little Denis. Manson obviously knew this.

Savard....fighting (?) ....Back in the 80's and 90's, Savard was a f*ckin' chipmunk. He would come out of his hole, make a BIG FART, and run right back in!

Savard was very skilled with the puck, but that's about it.
