DEC 6TH 1972 HAWKS dan maloney impresses kings

I remember watching this game on TV the hawks shut ot the kings on the scoreboard 6-0 and the fight card 5-0
the first and last fight featured dangerous dan knocking down the always courageous mike corrigan in the first one and
late in the 3rd pounding terry harper who the desperate king announcer jiggs mcdonald pointed out was landing some
body shots while dan was landing headshots

You would think the hawks would realize what they had but they were
more impressed with 40 something ralph backsrom of the kings and sure enough toward the end of the season the
trade that made the kings a playoff team the next year went down and dan was a king..The la fans had no idea what they had until
the late season game with the blues when wild man steve derbano had his jaw and face broken by the future heavy weight champion of the N H L dan maloney !!

Not sure who was the biggest punching bag Harper or Corrigan. Maloney was the champ for a short time going undefeated for a 2 or 3 year stretch.

A few other bouts!

How about Dangerous Dan Maloney, then with the Chicago Blackhawks pounding out Rick Smith of the Bruins. If it wasn't for Don Awrey grabbing onto Maloney's shirt, Smith would have taken a bigger beating!!!

His fight with Ted Green would be considered "unfair" by today's standards as it was a bench clearer between the Blackhawks and the Bruins and Green was flailing away as Maloney was being held. No third man in the 70's.

A real surprise for me was when Maloney, then of the Detriot Red Wings, getting beat by Terry O'Reilly of the Bruins rather easily in one of their fights.

Maloney got a lot of press for his slamming of Brian Glennie's head of the ice when the Red Wings met up with the Maple Leafs!

Maloney was one tough SOB and for a few years was at the top of the NHL.

For us novice king fans of the 60's and early 70's we pretty much believed everything we heard and read from so called hockey experts . one of the first kings hockey game night program's i saw had a some what embellished bio's of players and terry harper was noted as 'one of the most feared fighters' in the nhl . I suppose those "body shots" harper delivered to maloney were more effective then the head shots he was taking !

I dont think harper ever won a fight with los angeles and i doubt he did with montreal or detriot either but still he was one
hell of a great defenceman good luck trying to skate around him ! the guy could poke check and tie up his man as good as
any defencemen the kings ever had right up to rob blake and to think he was 'over the hill' when he arived on the kings !

Good fighter, good hockey player and by all accounts an enthusiastic good team player who had his teammates' backs at all times, once even famously getting him charged. Had back-to-back 27 goal seasons, scored 20 three times, was an important guy in the Leafs seven game upset of the Fishsticks. Done a little early due to injuries and became a decent head coach too, got the Leafs into the playoffs and then did the same twice in Winnipeg of all places. Oh, and he was a good fighter too. Did I forget to mention that?

I saw little of him in LA, a bit in DET and a fair amount in TO. Terrific guy in his role. Never did see the elite, feared champ I had heard so much about, apparently a bum shoulder slowed him down a bit, opponents seemed to like to get in tight and grab on, survival likely on their minds. I did see the Glennie attack game . . . he could certainly deliver a sucker punch/attack and follow up beating. An overreaction after a very tough open ice hit by Glennie on a Wing, but it was easy to see why he was feared.

interestingly enough dan did another twin destruction for the kings on the road at Detroit flooring brent hughes and tom mellor of the wings . Just like the kings a few years before the wings knew they had to have him however dans stock had gone up quite a bit so it took a bit more then ralph backstrom to get him..Like future hall of fame marcel dionne !

The kings however had to throw terry harper also into the trade and pretty much lost there heart and soul as they were routed
and intimidated the following season even thou marcel was great !!

Nice to see someone knowlegeable about the L.A. Kings of that era. Several good fighters like maloney and, especially, Bert Wilson fall thru the cracks here a bit. Wilson, by all accounts, was an outstanding fighter as well. I'd love to hear some info on a lot of the guys he fought that we know better............cochrane, mann, the bruins etc.

bert wilson as a king beat dan maloney bad in dans first year after his trade to detriot for marcel then in the famous randy holt bench clear game before the big brawl he had a sluggfest with all timer behn wilson and had ben hanging on at the end

i pretty much either attended saw or listen to every king game of that time and i dont think i ever saw bert lose a fight and perhaps even more telling i don't think maloney or wilson ever went looking for a rematch

You're a great addition to this site King of Culver. Great info about the Kings early 70's fights as this has been a bit of a black hole here.

Also nice to see that your spelling has improved

Keep up the good work!

Yeah, Bert Wilson suffers from a serious lack of video (only about 5 clips). I have seen Barry Beck get the better of him but he shows up in DYG reviews in excellent fights against some real notables of that era. I can't recall anyone ever saying someone really got the best of him.

There are a few noted fighters who just donb't surface much on video. Jimmy Mann in his short run in winnipeg, Curt Fraser in vancouver. Much of Mcilhargey, Holt, and so on.

beyond bert wilson i would say that rosco Terry Ruskowski pretty much won about every fight he was in as a king ..the guy was a buzz saw i would say stan johnathon would be the most completable player but terry had much more skill and was even captain of the team before dave taylor got the job

In the first years before dan maloney the kings were pretty much beat up by everybody how ever one notable fistic highlight we had pre dan was bob berry of all people pounding bobby orr in a short bout that might of been only minor penalties but was a fight .. batteling billie smith started with the kings but the kings seemed to want to help the islanders win the cup so sent him over there and a few years latter butch goring followed and on with the islander cup run

On of Maloney's worst beating was by Willi Plett. Plett is his rookie year dropped Maloney to his knees with a flurry of punches. Wish this fight would surface on tape.

Funny that both of the last two guys mentioned suffer from a lack of video as well. Willi Plett (at least in atlanta) and Ruskowski for sure. Love to see more of "ruffian" Dave Hoyda too.

There is a brief clip out there of plett getting floored by dave hutchinson of the kings in the Atlanta playoff series i mentioned

The best burt wilson footage i have seen was the fight with ben wilson that i also alluded to . burt started with the rangers but
just like dan maloney it took that king uni to bring out his best

With roscoe i understand he was a holly terror in the w h a but again looks like the king uni brought out his best..i am not sure
about existing footage but i know what i saw he was some kind of fighter scarred of nobody and always swinging away

Good stuff guys. Being a Cali fight fan it's nice to hear about the dude's who did it pre-Sharks era. From what I understand the Seals were weenies. Even though I'm from the Bay Area and am supposed to despise all sports related items south of Salinas it's nice to hear about the King's and their legacy of toughness. Keep it coming!!
