David v Goliath Hockey fights...

Fights when height and weight advantages did not matter...

I was watching a clip this morning from the AHL when 6'8'' 250lbs tough guy Joe Finley was fighting Greg Scott who was 8'' shorts and 60lbs lighter in weight and a non fighter... The out come was not what you would of predicted before hand with Scott throwing one haymaker and catching Finley flush early on to knock the bigger guy down to the ice... Lucky punch maybe but he took the much bigger much tougher guy down.

Here's the fight...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FKgmYttb2m0

I was then wondering about other fights were similar outcomes happened.. Here's a few I found..

..........

6'9'' 270Lbs .. Lane Manson v Grant McNeill .. 6'1'' 220lbs

WHL 2003 Manson squares off with McNeill centre ice.. Couple of punches later and Manson is dropped on his arse by McNeill...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XeG6gOW0zOs

...........

6'8'' 265lbs .. Mike Varhaug v Pat Cote .. 6'3'' 200lbs

Varhaug was tearing up the LNAH the previous few seasons but in his 1st fight of 05/06 he came up against ex NHL enforcer Cote.. Varhaug was clearly winning the fight until Cote landed a bomb sparking the much bigger guy out for a KO win.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pOMzOrdnI1c

.............

6'8'' 250lbs .. Steve McKenna v Paul Kruse .. 6'1'' 215lbs

1998 NHL game between Buffalo and LA .. Ex Panthers enforcer Steve McKenna crashes into LA netminder so LA tough guy Paul Kruse goes after McKenna.. Kruse then gets the better of the much large McKenna..

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mjqcUnhLzEw

..............

6'8'' 250lbs .. Steve McKenna v P.J Stock .. 5'10'' 200lbs

NHL 2002 McKenna and Stock drop the gloves near centre ice and it's the much smaller Stock who lands the most punches and takes McKenna down to the ice.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SWYDgqp3UoM

..............

6'5'' 230lbs .. Mike Rupp v Arron Asham .. 5'11'' 205lbs

NHL 2003 . Rupp and Asham drop the gloves with Rupp starting out the stronger of the two.. Asham then forces Rupp against the boards and starts to feed him right hands forcing an end to the fight.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dzTqEzdbww0

................

6'8'' 250lbs .. Riley Emmerson v Jon Mirasty .. 5'10'' 220lbs

AHL 2008.. Short fight between Mirasty and the much taller Emmerson, but Mirasty landed the better punches and rocked Emmerson before they hit the ice..

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PLX49stl9pk

................

6'4'' 210lbs .. Marc Chouinard v Jordin Tootoo .. 5'9'' 190lbs

NHL 2004... Tootoo runs tough guy Alex Henry into the boards from behind so his defensive line mate Marc Chouinard steps in and goes after Tootoo.. Both guys exchange some good punches but Tootoo lands and big right hand at the end to end the fight as he drops Marc Chouinard to the ice.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5JurBYpY7AQ

................

6'7'' 240lbs .. Boris Valabik v Jordin Tootoo .. 5'9'' 190lbs

NHL 2008 .. Valabik drops the gloves with Tootoo , but it's Tootoo who lands a few bombs early on and rocks Valabik before the lino's came in.

One of the more popular David vs. Goliath style fights might be Jonathan vs. Bouchard.

Stan Jonathan-Pierre Bouchard and John...

Bouchard wasn't a 6'8 monster or anything like that, but this fight was a true david vs. goliath for that era.

That's not really David v Goliath in the same way as he was an accomplished fighter the Finley one is a great example of a bigger more experienced fighter losing to a non fighter

Great Topic!

The first one I thought of was Jonathan vs Bouchard, an all-time classic!
Some good ones already mentioned but how about

Rypien vs Hal Gill
Danny Gare vs Clark Gillies
Domi vs Enrico Ciccone
Domi vs Odjick
PJ Stock vs Peat

Terry Ruskowski, Dennis Polonich, Gary Howatt fights as well. They were all 5'8 and under. Polonich was 5'6.

Ryan Vandenbussche Vs Kyle Freadrich 3/3/00 -...

One of the best fights you'll see and a draw but should the 5'11 RV be even standing? He goes toe to toe with the 6'8 monster, knocking teeth out. The faces on the guys on the bench are priceless.
