Buskas, Loewen, Flemming

I just spent the night drinking at a bar called Hammers and met some really cool people. The owner is Bob "Hammer" Flemming who was a realy fukin cool guy. I looked him up here and didn't find anything, but did on drop your gloves. He spent a few games with the Sabres and had some stories about Rob Ray.

Anyways I was boozing with the guys in my unit and this older gent walks over and buys all drinks and said thanks for comming in. So I shoot the shyt with him about his bar and all the hockey stuff on the walls, very rare in Vegas. He turns out to be a stand up dude with more stories to tell then TO on the Jersey shore. He then introduces me to Rod Buskas and Darcy Loewen.

Turns out Loewen is a firefighter in Vegas, and Buskas is a airline pilot living in Vegas. So we continue to drink and bullshyt, with me asking did you fight this guy or that guy, and we got on the topic of Link Gaetz. I asked him if he fought him and he said no but met him through Darcy Loewen. He told the following story: Link Gaetz and Loewen went to Germany to play and before they even laced up the skates they got into a fight with a German biker group. It was alleged that it was 12 on 2. As Hammer was telling the story he had a shyt eating grin on his face and his eyes were like baseballs. He said that the biker gang was whoopin the two pretty bad for a while and link yelled to Darcy, " I just knocked One Out" and they continued to fight. Eventually a couple of the bikers took off running and Loewen and gaetz started to get the upper hand. At this time Darcy walks out of the bathroom and hears the story and tells Hammer yo stop telling tales, but walked away smiling like a kid in a candy store.

So many good stories about you name him in the fighting world to keep typing about, but it was fukin great. Three cool as dudes, down to earth and still like to ham it up.

So hammer later tells me that his Budweiser and Guiness dealers are huge hockey fans and offer him a box for the wrangler games with all the booze and food comped but he rarely goes because he runs the bar. He asked me to come with him and the guys adn gave me his number. The only thing he wanted in return was shooting lessons. His bar has been robbed twice.

His stories about Rob Ray and Gord Donnelly were fukin great. I could go on and on but I am seeing triples right now.

Good dude, great bar, even better stories.

Good story, lefthook.

Buskas is definitely one of my favorite Pens ever. The guy didn't back down to anyone. He threw a pretty good left and was a smart fighter, too. He was always there to represent during (what seemed to be forever) the lean enforcing years in Pittsburgh.

He's a pilot? I wouldn't try to hijack any plane he was flying.

Buskas is a cool dude. Got to meet him once when I went to a game out here when he was my buddy's coach. That was about 4-5 years ago.

That bar is down the street from the high school I graduated from. I've passed it by hundreds of times by never went in. I definitely have to check it out since its so close. Never knew Flemming owned it.

Foothill man. I don't live near either one though. I live on stephanie and horizon ridge.

Me and my buddy might go down to the bar right now actually.

I saw Loewen beat Vukota once. Probably his biggest win.

It's strange about his recall of Gaetz. I've seen two fights between the two minor league legends at NHLFightclub. Fleming deserves full marks for winning both in the AHL. One is clear and the other is a long, drawn out battle that i thought he won as well.........but much closer.

I always thought if people saw more of his AHL stuff, they would discount that loss to Rob Ray in round 2. I only saw him lose that fight and one (of two) to Frank "the animal" Bialowas who stunned him to take a win after a draw in round 1.

A straightforward T2T superheavyweight whose very impressive and entertaining in the dozen clips, or so, that are out there. I put him in the company of the Roberge bros, Wolf, James, Mailhot and Dean Ewen as being among the best minor circuit fighters i've seen and the two wins over legendary Link Gaetz make a lot of the case.

Check the clips out at "fightclub", and fleming in general.

BW,
Are you talking about Gerry Flemming when you mention the fight vs Rob Ray?

If so, I agree in that it didn't look like much, esp compared to the amount of ridicule Flemming took on this site.

Here is Bob Fleming vs Kirk Thomlinson (#2)

Awesome opening post/story.

More details would be appreciated.

By the way, Bob looks very impressive in the 2 fights posted above. Quick hands, a little crazy, and some power to boot.

I was always confused if they were two seperate guys that have been discussed (Bob, Gary, Gerry, Fleming, Flemming). I thought people were referring to one person, the one who destroyed tomlinson and looked so pissed and gray haired

I'm still a bit confused. The one was in the buffalo system. The guy i (guess) i'm referring to fought as a montreal farmhand mainly and was called up and fought ray twice. One clip was marred by leaving to show another bout and the other went ray's way. I think one of them retired to be a male nurse. The montreal/sherbrooke guy could sure fight. A no BS big guy who went right for you in T2T bouts and won nearly all of them...........looking every bit the equal of Bialowas and Gaetz etc.

I think Gerry was already a nurse when he turned pro.

I always remember him because he was one of the very first behemoth type enforcers. 6'5" and 240 pounds at a time when guys that big were few and far between.

He seemed like he could be a top end fighter, but never seemed to get much of an opportunity. Maybe his hockey skills were just that bad. I didn't see anything in the Ray fight to make me think he was a total fraud.
