Brutal Body Shots

I have been watching alot of boxing in the past couple days and really appreciate a good body punch, its the most devastating shot and can complete shut you down, and end a fight. I was thinking about some good body punches that have been thrown in hockey fights. I can only think of a few...MacIntyre on Brashear I believe, and Lyndon Byers on Trevor Steinburg- LB was stinging him to the liver with wicked shots. I was wondering if anyone remembers some great fights where the body punch was used effectively...even ending the fight? Post some up please!!

JK- T.Johnson and Stothers...JK 's bloody fist-print on the body of Johnson ...who also was bothered by the body blows....JK 's hand liked it too ..softer than the helmet.

Marty McSorley against Larry Playfair. I believe McSorley was with Edmonton and Playfair was with LA. Did it stop the fight? In a way as Playfair was tired out and it gave the decision to McSorley. This was a very good fight and feature two top heavyweights of their time.

Derek Boogard hurt Brad May with some body shots after the Kim Johnsson playoff beating.

"Some would say I sucker-punched Kim Johnsson, but I would disagree," May said. "Regardless, I punched Johnsson first and he was injured. He was coming into the scrum. If it was me coming into the scrum my gloves would be off and I'd be looking for a partner. He came into the pile and really wasn't paying attention. I was suspended for three playoff games.

"We ended up beating Minnesota out the next game and I knew, right from the second I hit Johnsson, that they had the toughest guy in the NHL and for me to be honourable and accountable for my actions, the next time we played Minnesota, I'm going to have to stand up for what I did and I'd have to fight the toughest guy on their team. If he wants to fight four times then I have to fight him four times."

May had fought Boogaard once before, as a member of the Colorado Avalanche, but he said that wasn't much of a bout. Now he had all summer to think about his next meeting with the NHL's biggest and baddest fighter. He knew it was coming, but he certainly wasn't looking forward to it.

"I worked out hard that summer and the days I didn't feel like training or wanted to cut a workout short, what kept me going was the notion that three or four months from now I'm going to have to pay the piper for what I'd done," May recalled. "I fully expected that Boogaard was champing at the bit to fight me. I owed it not only to Johnsson, but also to Boogaard, because he was Minnesota's tough guy, to stand up for myself. I had crossed the line, but I knew I would be accountable for it."

The big day finally arrived Oct. 14, 2007. It was an afternoon game (5 p.m. start) in Anaheim and May said the four days leading up to that contest -- to the inevitable showdown with Boogaard -- were a living hell.

"We played on a Wednesday so I had all day Thursday, Friday and Saturday and most of Sunday to think about this fight I was going to have with Boogaard," he said. "I knew it was coming. I had heard a saying that goes, 'The anticipation of death is worse than death itself,' and I know that to be true. It wasn't a good place to be. I had to sleep with the lights on."

May said the impending fight wreaked havoc on his life.

"My mood was affected," he said. "I was really short with everybody; irritable and frustrated. I still had to live my life, practise and pick up the kids from school, but at the end of the day everybody knew I was uncomfortable.

"On the Saturday morning before the fight my wife, Brigette, said, 'What's wrong with you? You've basically been an ass the past few days.' I was like, 'Are you kidding me? I'm going to the slaughter tomorrow and nobody seems to care.' She said, 'I have the perfect song for you. It's by U2: Sunday Blood Sunday.' It was pretty funny.

"That night I went to bed around midnight, but I couldn't sleep. It's 1 o'clock…2 o'clock…3 o'clock. I still couldn't sleep so I got up and went on YouTube and watched every fight I could with guys who were 6-foot-6. The thing is, he's 6-foot-8. I watched Jim Kyte against Tie Domi. What does the shorter guy do to protect himself and possibly win the fight? I think I feel asleep around 5 a.m."

The inevitable showdown occurred in the second period and after all the build-up, it wasn't really much of a scrap. That said, May landed a few good punches on his much bigger opponent and didn't absorb any hard hits to the head. He had survived.

"It was a good fight," May declared. "I did alright. I don't even think he hit me other than in the ribs, which hurt for about a week. The respect I got from players around the league was amazing. I think Boogaard even respected me. I faced up to him."

Yeah, I was trying to figure how to post the video up of that fight! LOL. MacIntyre REALLY hurt Brashear there at the end, he had to take a knee after a shot to the ribs- or in that general area, where you get punched and literally cant breathe, and is damn painful. I have a little bit of boxing bsckground and can say that Id rather get hit in the face because its less painful. Both suck though!
Nilan30 also mentioned the Lucic-Komisarek fight of this past year and thats a great one too. Komisarek was writhing in pain visibly after some body blows. I would defintiley contribute that to Lucics boxing background. "Go to the body and the head will follow" is more like "Go to the body and the man will fall."

Ever heard of Billy Irwin from Niagara Falls?? he was a lightweight who ended most of his fights with the "left hook to the liver', it was a beautiful thing, he was top 10 for awhile in the late 90's, perfect punch.....

Back in my Boxing days I had a guy ask me to spar oneday, a colored fella who said he had never sparred before (which was obvious bull$hit), he was about 15 lbs heavier and a bit taller.......anyways into the ring we went and this guy's arms seemed like they were 8 feet long!! he was beating the $hit out of me, I couldnt get out of the way of this bastid's punches, even when I thought I was way out of range "pop" he'd nail me, this made me really mad, I could take a shot so I kept coming t him and he was obviously trying to KO me......I chased this fukker down stopping his punches with my grill for 2 and a half rounds when finally I cornered him as he seemed to be gassing and just blasted him with a single left hook right on the liver, he let out a "groooooan" and hit the deck, all his air left him, writhing around on the canvas like he took a bullet!! I said "get the fukk up, it's my turn now"!! he stayed down, I wanted to hurt him bad, but I didnt realize he already was hurt bad from about the only punch I landed in the whole 3 rounds!! It saved face because everyone in the gym was watching him beat the hell out of me until I caught him, I really wanted to put him to sleep but it was at that moment I truely realized you can hurt a guy way more to the body....he never showed his face in the gym again.

Good stuff...bullies usually dont last in the gym! With the exception of a few of course.
My favorite body shot KO of all time was Micky Ward vs. Alfonso Sanchez !! Wish I knew how to post the video, but if anyone hasnt seen it, its a beauty. Out of nowhere. I love when the shot happens- the opponent doesnt go down right away- then all of a sudden you can see the breath being taken from them, and they go down! I remember sparring taking a body punch and I seriously almost **** myself! LOL.

Actually watching a Ricky Hatton documentary, I realized he's a damn good body puncher as well.

I gotta watch some more fight videos today and see if I can find some good hockey fight body shots. Its a beautiful thing.

Scott Parker was a guy that loved to throw body shots.

His fight vs Stephen Peat is a great example. He threw about 14
