big upsets let downs for my team

as a king fan almost from day one i have seen many of my players lose when i expected them to win & pull the big upset so ill go thru some i recall in some what of a logical order .the first bench clear i recall was about 1970 when the leafs came to town.they had beat the kings bad in toronto & the message board at the garden had called it the bay street shooting gallery or some such thing.well the kings were pissed and said there would be blood on the ice next time they played. i did not know much about fighting put our big player was gilles maronte (camptain crunch) so 20 secounds or so into the game he takes a run at bobby baun drops the gloves & he dont know how to fight and getts beatup big time latter during the bench clear he trys again but as big as he is he has nothing and gets creamed by another leaf. i went home crying (like the 9 year old i was) dan maloney came along a few years latter and all was right in the world seemed like he could not lose .his second year he droped them with schultz i was looking for a easy win but dave took a few shoots and got a draw out of it more trama but i was older so understood these things happen. a few years latter & hutch joined the kings and had a long run of beatings. well in his second year i was at the games against the atlanta flames and at center ice he starts throwing at a guy named ken houston. we are expecting a big hutch win but houston sends him down twice.thats what i get for trusting the guy.well the kings were so impressed they picked up houston and in his first king fight he sqaures off with daryl sittler again i expect a easy win but noooo down goes houston twice the end of that .a few years latter the kings have larry playfair & joe patterson in the line up against the oilers and i figure finaly marty mcsorley will get it but know he beats them both bad back to back this is late 80's i think. well this is a long post ill get to the last 15 years next post.

Sorry Bong, You couldn't have felt to good during the Ranger-King brawl in 1981 when Marcel Dionne was more guttsey then most of the kings. Remember he challenged Ed Hospodar.
Worst thing about the kings were that the damn fans wouldn't sit down at the Forum blocking that action. I also miss their yellow/purple uniforms!

I was a King fan in those days as well, all the way from Quebec, and I read Gerry Desjardins' book about his first season in the NHL (1968-69) with Los Angeles. That brawl is featured in the 1971 Canadian film "Face Off" and one of the fights I recall was the Leafs Jim Dorey thrashing LA's Paul Curtis. My all-time fave King, tho', is Jay Miller. Nobody could start a fight for no reason at all better than Jay.

One of my most painful memories was the beating the Kings took from Philly on March 11th/1979. All LA had for beef in that massacre was Randy Holt, Bert Wilson, and Glen Goldup. I read somewhere that those Kings had 7 Lady Byng candidates in the line-up. Thank goodness Dave Hoyda wasn't dressed or I know he would've slugged Butch Goring or Vic Venasky. I too miss the gold uni's at home and the forum blue on the road and whenever I'm on the Playstation 2 I always deck the Kings out in their 70's sweaters.

Bong, Great move by Jake Milford stealing Charlie Simmer from the Cleveland Barons who had been the Golden Seals. Remember Cleveland/California kept playing Simmer as a center iceman and Bob Berry put him at left wing. The triple crown line was a great line, too bad Simmer broke his leg but Simmer did ok. He married Playboy playmate Terri Wells who was hot, real tall with great legs and a nice bush in the pre shaven days.

well larry i saw that brawl live on tv and have short clip of it (as i thing you do on your bench clear tape) the kings did very well in the main bouts ! holt took four clean shots from holmgrem then tkoed him with some short jabs.steve jensen had 3 go arounds with mel bridgeman and even thou he took maybe 20 shots he knocked bridgman down twice the 2nd time frank bathe had to come in to save him. they really stood up in that one!

yes paul curtis the guy won fight in his life it was against gene carr (who the kings got along with tommy williams and mike murphy for washed up giles maronte) the trade turned them around and made them a playoff team. the kings had alot of guys who never won a fight...gene carr, rob palmer or won 1 fight dave taylor over harold snepts upset ! phil sykes i think beat gretzky or was it a draw they also had a lot of enforcers who could not fight warren rychal , kelly bukberger ect god i hate them some times.......

Bad Trade Emile Francis

Good Call, that trade was a disaster for the Rangers. Captain Crunch became Captain Crumble! Francis was always trading Mike Murphy like he had the plague or something. Murphy was a hell of a player. Remember St. Louis and LA were like Ranger farm teams. Francis traded a host of good young players to the Blues also like Moose Dupont, Steve Durbano, Bert Wilson. For some reason Francis never employed policeman, I don't know why! The first two things Grapes Cherry told Brad Park was lose 20lbs and no fighting, I have guys who do that and Jean Ratelle played great with Boston in the playoffs because he was protected!

Big Larry, great call on Dave Hoyda. The guy was full of you know what. Remember when he fought 5'9" 175lb Eddie Johnstone in that mugging when Bridgeman fought Mark Heaslip and Fotiu was in his gray suit. Big Dave, where was he when Jim Cunningham was getting 3 beatings plus 2 headbutts from Fotiu or during the 1978-79 season. While I'm a Ranger fan, I immensly enjoyed Clark Gillies kicking his ass on Uniondale after another Hoyda attack, this time on Mike Bossy. Dave Hoyda, what did he do with Winnipeg and how long was he in the league after his Flyer days. Hound Kelly and Don Saleski were like him except they could play the game. I remember Kelly scoring over 60 points in Washington which showed he could play and Saleski was another classic spot picker but scored 20 goals a year and killed penalties but Dave Hoyda, Forgettaboutit!

Speaking of Hoyda, there was a Rangers/Flyers preseason game in 77, Hoyda was a rookie and started fighting a guy named Bud Stefanski (now there's a notorious tuff guy, LOL). Hoyda was hammering away, and Fotiu was going crazy trying to get at Hoyda. Fotiu was being held back by both Rick Lapointe and Paul Holmgren. Finally, Fotiu managed to get a hand free while both Flyers were still holding on to him and he grabbed a hold of Hoyda's jersey, tearing it off. Hoyda wanted nothing to do with Fotiu and was much more content fighting Stefanski. This brought Hound Kelly off the bench, but unfortunately for him, he ran straight into Jim Troy who beat the hell out of him. Ron Duguay got into it with Dan Clark during this mini-brawl.

There was one other fight in that game, noted tough guy Mel Bridgman, who once again couldn't manage to find Fotiu, did manage to beat up Benoit Gosselin.

Amazing how Hoyda and Bridgman could pick out the Stefanski's and Gosselin's, yet couldn't seem to find Fotiu.

Correctamundo!

The Flyers were full of you know what. Most of their guys were bullies hence the name Broad Street Bullies. There was always a mugging, there was always a line change where they had more men on the ice, there was always non fighters like Dale Rolfe, Bud Stefanski, Eddie Johnstone, the poor guy with the California Golden Seals whose name escapes me who was beaten up by about 4 Flyers who were picked on. Whenever you confronted them like Fotiu or Gillies, the nonsence stopped. Who else would dare go in Behn Wilson's face like Fotiu and get away with it. Probably their most respectable fighter was Wolfman Jack McIllhargy who was honest and clean and fought only tough guys and was a hell of a fighter. Jack was great and people respected him but guys like Cochrane taking on Duguay, boy there's a mismatch or Wilson taking on Pierre Plante. Takes a lot of guts there! Another respected guy was Joe Paterson. Remember during that Ranger brawl when Beck had Brown down in the corner for about 10 minutes, Paterson had Mark Pavelich and to Paterson's credit just held him and didn't try to bully him. In that same fight, an asshole like Lindsey Carson was running around trying to cheapshot people. The alltime Flyer asshole had to be Rat Linsemen. What a piece of ****! This guy is evidently the same way in real life. I'd love to knock him out!
