The Wilson fight with Magnuson was a beating before it started. Magnuson was getting beatup in his prime let alone at that age.

O'Reilly over Maloney shocked me. If I'm not mistaken, Maloney did not throw a punch and ate about 7 or 8. I would have suspected the other way around as Maloney was a top guy at the time.

Stan Jonathan on Pierre Bouchard:

Stan Jonathan-Pierre Bouchard and John Wensink-Gilles Lupien Fight - YouTube
Jonathan and Bouchard wasn't a mismatch at the time - Bouchard was a kind of no nonsense defenseman that didn't fight much but had good size and could go... He fought Dave "the Hammer" Schultz three times, (1 loss, 1 edge and 1 outright win) and the Hammer said this:
Quote:
"At that point, I just grabbed on to him and held on for dear life. He got me good, but nobody in the building could tell that he walloped me. D'Amico came up to me afterward and said he could not believe I was still standing."
To this day, Schultz says that it's still the hardest he was hit in a hockey fight. Doesn't get nearly the press that Robinson or Gillies fights get on here.

Bouchard also tuned up Ted Irvine pretty badly as noted here:

Quote:
"I remember my son brought home a book from the library one day and there's a picture of Butch Bouchard and I fighting in the Garden and he said dad, look, you're going with Bouchard, look at you, you're doing pretty good. I said well, look at the picture real good and you'll see Bouchard's hand just coming up under mine. He knocked me out with one punch, eh? And I'll never forget that because I was supposed to be going out with the executive of Sports Illustrated after, I couldn't get my glasses on my head was so swollen up. We went back into Montreal two days later and in the paper Butch Bouchard says the only guy I respect on the Rangers is Irvine, at least he'll fight."
Bouchard also dropped Bobby Baun of the Leafs in a brawl. Rick Ley came in third man to save Baun.

Bouchard also handled Cashman in a bench clearing brawl with the Bruins. Beat him badly enough that Dave Forbes jumped in as third man to save Cashman. Video is on YouTube. Add wins over Gord Lane and a beating of Keith Magnusson and you're not dealing with a blushing violet. He was just a good honest defenseman that didn't fight often but was good when he did go...

As far as Jonathan goes he was decent but not unbeatable going in to that fight. Schultz got the better of their toe to toe scrap the year before. Jonathan did drop Hillworth and had wins over Jerry Butler and Moose Dupont and an edge over Danny Gare. But he also lost a slight decision to Larry Robinson in a quick one and basically quit on the fight he had with Kurt Walker after Walker hit him with a few short hard lefts.

Don Cherry's viewpoint:
Quote:
This was the best fight I ever saw. We were playing against the Canadiens in the playoffs, and as usual it was hot and heavy. For some reason Habs coach Scotty Bowman puts on all his "heavies" for a faceoff.
Rick Chartraw (6-foot-2, 200-pounds), Gilles Lupien (6-foot-5, 220-pounds), Larry Robinson (6-foot-3, 220-pounds) and Bouchard (6- foot-2, 230-pounds). I forget who the fifth guy was, but with the other four, it didn't matter.
I had on two of my heavies, John Wensink (6-foot-2, 200-pounds) and Terry O'Reilly (6-foot-2, 205-pounds). I also had Peter McNab out there, and he was a giant (6-foot-4, 200-pounds), but he was a scorer and playmaker, not a fighter. So when I saw who Scotty had sent out to dance, I sent out my pitbull, Stanley Jonathan (5-toot- 9, 175-pounds), because I knew a war was about to start.

We won the draw, but the puck went out of their end and came back in quickly for an offside. So Stan skates up alongside of Pierre and sort of tugs at him. It looked like David and Goliath. Pierre accepted the challenge and away they go.
Boy, does Pierre start off great. He is lifting Stan off the ice and throwing him around. I'm on the bench and I say, "Uh-oh, Stan looks like he's bitten off more than he can chew. Get ready, boys."
I can't let Stan take this rap.
All of a sudden, Stan switches hands, from a righty to a lefty. This is tough for Pierre and it catches him off balance. It was doubly tough with Stan. He could KO you with either hand.
Stan landed a heavy left and Pierre started to go down, but as he's falling Stan pours about three more on him, then the "coup de grace," as they say, was just as Pierre hit the ice.
The blood was everywhere, even on linesman John D'Amico.
I felt kind of sorry for Pierre. He was a good guy, but if you play with the bull, you're going to get the horns.
I remember after the fight McNab said, "When I saw Scotty put on all those tough guys looking for trouble, I said to myself, 'Why am I out here?' And when Grapes put on Stan to take my place, it was the happiest moment of my life."

When they talked to Pierre after, he said, "Serge Savard is my hero, but I really didn't want a nose like him."
When Pierre was asked if he thought he'd ever play again in the NHL, he replied, "Yeah, if I take up the organ."
Jonathan just switched hands and caught Bouchard big time. I thought Bouchard was winning the fight up till that point. The last shot Jonathan throws straight down on the ice is vicious - I think that's where most of the blood comes from. I definitely wouldn't consider it a mismatch at all though.

It was an incredible fight live. You could cut the intensity with a knife. I was a huge Stan Jonathan fan before, and an even bigger one after. His switching hands in this fight just showed how much he developed as a fighter. The other fight that comes to mind, is the fight he had with Big Behn where he ducks under his rights. Great boxing skills!

A slight twist on this topic is when Uwe Krupp went and fought a prime Joey Kocur in Detroit one night around Christmas 1987.. the first time I saw the fight, I was expecting Krupp to get destroyed, the big German actually put up a decent fight before falling over the back of the net.

It was the same game as the whole Probert/Maguire/Yzerman incident.
