I think what it speaks to is the importance of the psychological advantage that is so often overlooked when considering these guys and the roles they play. Gillies obviously lost his edge and was questioning himself - Wilson sensed that and exploited it several times... It's one of those intangibles that rarely gets discussed, but it's something to consider.
I think this assessment is on sound footing - pehaps even hitting the nail on the head - flatout makes sense
