All-Time Top Cops on the beat

When we talk about protecting teamates, these guys were the very best the NHL had to offer.

They never "ducked" an opponent no matter how tough or what the situation was. Everyone on their team knew they always had their back.

No we are not talking about necessarily hockeys best fighters but the guys who made everyone's life a little safer around them.

Here is 5 guys that come right to mind for me, let's hear about yours

1) Terry O'Reilly
2) Dave Brown
3) Nick Fotiu
4) Bob Probert
5) Marty McSorley

Therr are literally tons. Besides the already mentioned, Jeff Odgers comes to mind,.he wouldnt back down from anyone, and always stood up for his teamates even if he took some beatings. Also, was a team Captain for at leasy one or two teams if I remember correctly.
While thinking of Odgers, I then thought pf Stu Grimson. The list goes on and on.

Such an important criteria when looking at tough guys. Can't argue with these names or guys like Gillies, Cashman . . . first line guys who could play and dissuade the liberties from being taken. John Ferguson has to get a mention. He's before even my time, but the track record speaks for itself. Here in Philly, Brown, McCarthy and Brashear filled the role best over the 28 years I've lived in the area.

Not an enforcer per se but Wendel Clark should get a mention here.

Graves, McPhee and Johnstone were fearless and fought many guys 6" taller and 40 lbs heavier. Playfair was a monster and was very much feared around the league.

One of the originals! Saw some of his antics first hand and he really handled the rough stuff for the Canadiens. Not a huge guy but fierce and very intense!

Odgers was all guts and took on all the major guys. Though he was a big guy, he wasn't afraid to throw down with anyone. He played the game hard. Grimson was always taking up for his smaller teamates and was there win, lose or draw. These were two character guys that any team would want!

Was the game I remember him most for. Outsized but not out matched. It great when a top notch player is also a grinder!

Kelly Chase always stuck up for his team mates no matter how big the other guy was. Basil McRae comes to mind too.
