Sens owner Eugene Melnyk outraged at Cooke

Ottawa Senators owner Eugene Melnyk is "outraged" that his club will be without Norris Trophy-winning defenceman Erik Karlsson for the remainder of the season.

Melnyk spoke to the Ottawa Sun on Thursday and wondered aloud why Pittsburgh Penguins forward Matt Cooke, whose skate blade cut Karlsson's achilles tendon on Wednesday night, was still allowed to play in the league after being suspended by the NHL five times previously.

"I'm very upset. Actually I'm more than upset; I'm outraged that in this day and age this continues," said Melnyk. "Whether it's accidental or not, that's not our job to judge. That's why the NHL is there to assess it.

"This guy should be kicked ... He doesn't belong in the league. He belongs somewhere where the goons play," Melnyk told the Sun. "Get him in the Central League. He can be a $60,000-a-year guy playing pick-up hockey there."

Looks like an emotional response from an owner who just lost his star.

IMO it wasnt intentional. Cooke is a scumbag... We all know that... But in this case he's innocent of malice.

I heard on the radio that there has been somewhat of an upswing in the number of players wearing those Kevlar socks.

Hated Matt Cooke since the first time he stepped onto that ice and created one of the biggest **** storms in NHL history. I hated him when he signed with my team the Pens and I still hate him to this day as a hockey player.

Mr. Melnyk needs to calm down and realize it was an accident. Losing your 2 stars is tough, but as Shero said the Pens know all about that. The thoughts of Letestu being our top center for a while is more than enough proof of that.

Listen Mr. Melnyk, as a card-carrying member of the "Lynch Matt Cooke" brigade, there is no way in hell that was an intentional kick. It was nothing more than a fluke accident. You say the Pens' organization have good people at the top? Well, if I remember correctly, you didn't hear much of anything come from Ray Shero or Mario Lemieux when Dave Steckel caught Crosby with an inadventent elbow, or curse Tyler Myers for inadvertently backing into Malkin's knee, tearing his ACL.

In other words, there was no malicious intent and the league agreed. So suck it up and deal with it.

I also find it ironic that he calls the NHL a "league for elite players," yet he has/had no problem signing the paychecks for guys like Chris Neil and Brian McGrattan. Oh, and was he outraged when Neil nearly decapitated Chris Drury a few years back? I bet not.

I think he has one valid point. How many suspensions do you get? There should be a 5 suspensions and you're gone for a year rule.

As far as this incident, he's being a whiner as it was just an unlucky play.

That loud mouth needs to STFU...shorthly after the strike ended he said the sens were the best team in hockey and should win the cup. Then spezza is out with surgery and now this happens to karlsson. Ya it sucks but how do you think the pens felt last year or the numerous other teams have gone through this ya selfish fukc...

And for the record it would take about four guys salaries to make $ 60,000 in that goon league CHL. And it's also far from pick up hockey those guys are out there busting there asses off. Some still chasing the dream while others are just prolonging their careers so they don't have to get a real job.. Man that pisses me off to just throw that out there like the guys in the central league are bums!!!
