Red Wings Minor League Prospect Bryan Rufenach Passes Away

PRINCETON, N.J. – The ECHL and its member teams mourn the loss and express their condolences to the family and friends of former ECHL defenseman Bryan Rufenach, who passed away this week while traveling in Switzerland. He was 23-years-old.

Rufenach played in 60 games with Toledo over the previous two seasons, scoring 35 points (14g-21a) while also tallying two assists in 13 games with Grand Rapids of the American Hockey League. A seventh round selection (208th overall) by the Detroit Red Wings in the 2007 NHL Entry Draft, Rufenach played four seasons of collegiate hockey at Clarkson University.

Arrangements are pending at this time.

I refuse to have kids just for this reason. If my child ever passed away before me I wouldnt be able to live day to day with that on my mind.

Thoughts are with his family.

Toledo Walleye defenseman Bryan Rufenach died after touching an overhead power line at a train station in Grindelwald, Switzerland.

According to the Swiss newspaper 20 Minuten, Rufenach died around 3:30 in the morning on Tuesday.

Rufenach, 23, was with a childhood friend on a backpacking tour through Europe. The pair had climbed aboard a stationary train car in Grindelwald when he touched the overhead line and was electrocuted.

Rufenach's friend tried to resuscitate him and an ambulance was called to the scene. But Rufenach died of his injuries, according to the newspaper. ...

Rest in peace, way too young to go.

On a side note, I just don't get people thinking it is a good idea to touch power lines. I've seen someone do it and get electrocuted then pass away a few days later, and also went to school with 2 kids who grabbed power lines and both have severe scars for life. The first guy was a middle-aged adult, and the two guys I went to school with were about 10 and 5 or 6 years old at the time.

Either way, it is a shame.
