Quebec City mayor eyes return of Nordiques to NHL

Quote:
QUEBEC CITY, Quebec (AP)—The mayor of Quebec City has spoken with the NHL about the possible return of the Nordiques to the NHL.

Mayor Regis Labeaume said Saturday he met with NHL commissioner Gary Bettman along with former Nordiques owner Marcel Aubut. The mayor adds that the talks in New York on Friday were “very profitable, very worthwhile.”

Bettman said this month he would consider Quebec City as a possible home to an NHL team if it followed through on plans to build a top arena and if a team were for sale. The Nordiques were sold in 1995 and moved to Denver as the Colorado Avalanche.

Winnipeg has a new rink so lets get them a team first and then if Quebec gets a rink move forward.

I'm all for a return for the Nordiques, but isn't Quebec City a really small market?

It's a really nice city, yeah kinda small, and I don't know what the people there make, and if they can afford NHL prices. But it is a beautiful city, a lot of history there.

The funny thing is even after 15 years, the city is still full of Nordiques flags, and merchandising products everywhere...I think people there love their team as much as in Montreal, there are just a lot less fans and I'm not sure if there are enough to support an NHL team, after all most people in Quebec in some way are Habs fans.

just for the record Green Bay has a population of just over 100,000 and has season tickets sold out for eternity..... so a small market is viable.

Anyone thinking Coyotes...Islanders....panthers?????

But Green Bay doesn't really have any nearby competition. You have to think that a lot of people in Quebec City are Habs fans now.

And no, the Islanders aren't moving.

There's also the difference between convincing people to come to 8 home games versus 41, even with the obvious price differential.

Green Bay is kind of an odd duck when you talk about franchises.

One, it's publicly owned.

Two, it's just far enough away from Minneapolis and Chicago to keep it out of the "you're too close to my territory" thing.

Three, The Packers are more of a state thing than just a Green Bay thing. Almost half of the season ticket holders are from the Milwaukee area. You could almost call them the Wisconsin Packers.

I know, used to get the tickets when I was young chap, for the home games in Milwaukee. Just saying,

I suppose that could be said than that, if you actually spread the space between teams out further you can pull from a farther away crowd. IE I live about 3 1/2 - 4 hours away from New Orleans, but there are plenty of Saints fans, because that's the closest team.

No doubt. If it's a popular sport with a big enough area surrounding it, you could definately draw fans from a surrounding area.
